In Contact tariff is just incoming calls isn't it? I therefore doubt this would work as the condition of free caller display is based on you making "some calls".

"in contact" users can make outgoing free "calls"

I have already put a note up about this but I dont make calls thru BT (i'm talk talk) but I did agree to recieve marketing calls from BT and as a result they said it would be free :)

Yes, I have - one call is enough.

BT were initially rather evasive when I asked for clarification of "some calls". So I asked what would happen if I made just one call with BT after joining BT Privacy At Home. How long would it be before I was charged for the service?

The response was that it was free and that I would never be charged.

In practice, I make plenty of 0844 calls via BT (I checked that this non-geogaphic code would count, and was told that it would), so I won't be able to confirm it from personal experience.

Now I'm kicking myself that I didn't ask for confirmation that Caller Display wouldn't be withdrawn after a period of making no further calls via BT. Maybe that's the catch...

In post No 159 on this thread I told of my conversation with BT who told me, not "One call" but one call per month.

I've paid for the Caller display service for years, so signed up for the free service as soon as I saw it mentioned last week.

Ever since, the service hasn't worked! :(

Blinkin' BT - they can't do anything right!

Exactly. I was expecting the same answer, so that I could then quiz them about their definition of a month, i.e. four weeks, a calendar month, a billing month?

But no, the answer was unequivocal: free forever after one call.

For those of you still hovering, I would recommend the freephone method.

I just did it from an NTL phone for my son who is with BT, lives a hundred+ miles away.
I Just followed the speil and entered his BT number, and bingo, he had Caller ID on his phone in 10 mins.
(and it will automatically cancel the fee if you already subscribe)............ honest and without human intervention too.
Firefly, hope you are sorted by now.

can i also add that the caller display function that is offered free is (according to t&c) only from calls on the bt network. so no mobiles or telewest callers numbers will display. I hope i am wrong because i am still paying for mine for that reason so i anyone can enlighten me please do!

I signed up through the website and it was almost instant.
Give it a day or so and if it still isn't working give them a call.

Just one point, I assume your phone is compatable?
