  • Half the population live in flats and terraced houses. They have no means to home charge their EV. How do you resolve that major issue ?
    Much lower than that.

Just 32% of households nationally have no scope for off-road parking.

Now factor in that many of those will be in dense urban areas with good public transport, too. 70% in London, but 33% of households have no car.

But there are plans and investigations for solutions. It's far from insoluble.

I had a large property portfolio of flats in Essex. They were spread around a dozen different sites. In my experience very few residents on those sites didn't own a car. Installing EV charge points would not be cost effective for anyone involved. We can't ignore those that won't be able to home charge. In towns like Basildon where there are around 100,000 flats and terraced houses......and almost every property has at least one car it will require some serious investment to provide EV charging. I'd suggest it aint gonna happen anytime soon.
Arguably as soon as the economics are right, it’ll happen.  At a guess, the majority of those flats and terraced houses you speak of have mains electricity, and the majority of the cars owned by those people get parked up somewhere either overnight or during the day at least once a week (I.e. are not just a taxi which never stops driving around). It doesn’t feel too far fetched that there might be a workable solution somewhere.  For example being able to charge at the rate of your home tariff whilst away from home sounds more like a software / billing problem than a Government problem.

I do think public perception will turn. My wife thought you couldn’t charge an electric vehicle in the rain, the oil man thought you had to charge them every day like a mobile phone. Everyone quotes EVs as being “much, much heavier” but ours is only two sacks of potatoes heavier than the petrol equivalent.

HGVs and the logistics industry have honestly never featured into the conversation when I’ve bought a car. I have never pleaded with the salesman to “think about those who live in flats”. It’s an interesting debate but I fear will become moot in due course. The logistics industry will get its act together (a two million pound fine for hauling an empty trailer would, for example, focus minds).  A startup electricity supplier will figure out how to get your home tariff on a socket 100 yards from your home. Where there is a will and all that.

  • No problem is impossible to solve, given time. But, only selling EVs from 2030 means flat and terraced house dwellers and anyone else who cannot home charge will be restricted to buying used ICE vehicles only and that isn't right.

No, it simply does not mean that.

PHEVs will be sold new until 2035.
Flats and terraced houses can have off-street parking.
There's ways to provide on-street charging.
Then there's other chargers available nearby.

Is it more convenient to have home charging? Yes, obviously.

Is it cheaper? Yes, but it doesn't necessarily have to be.

Then go see some other ones? Do we need to send you examples for you to believe that terraced houses can have driveways and flats can have off-street parking spaces?
  • There may well be examples where an off street facility can be provided but many hundreds of thousands, possibly the majority, will not have that option or will not have that option at an affordable cost.
