Have we ever been in a worse car buying era I don't know where to turn next.

Nebulous2 while it's ok saying what percentage of new cars are EV how many have actually been sold to a real customer and not just registered to get the numbers up. The real test will be the figures for January and February
Are you suggesting there's fields full of registered-but-unsold BEVs and PHEVs across the country?

    Actual figures:
    https://www.smmt.co.uk/vehicle-data/car-registrations/

    Nov - total down from 156,525 in 2023 to 153,610 (-1.9%) - BEV up from 24,359 (15.6%) to 38,510 (25.1)
    YTD - total up from 1,791,962 to 1,811,992 (+2.8%) - BEV up from 286,846 (16.3%) to 338,314 (18.7%)

Private sales of all fuel sources down from YTD 772,589 to 701,964 (-9.1%), Nov 60,506 to 58,496 (-3.3%) - so ~40% of sales all round.

Fleet registrations include vehicles heading for B2C finance where the financier is the registered keeper, AIUI.
DVLA's definition is more than 50 vehicles registered to one address, and provides much easier management of tax etc.

    What about mild-hybrids?
Are their sales going to be banned too?

I don't know about fields full but I am suggesting that thousands of EVs are registered but unsold. I find it strange that 2 months before the manufacturer's get fined for not selling enough EVs they stop supplying ICE cars and the registrations of EVs go up I think the same will happen this month but not January

    So where are they?

As for MH - hopefully, pointless things that they are.
But it looks like it's not quite as hard a "2030 cutoff" as reported. There's a consultation started on how to do that, closing in February.

If it IS as impossible as suggested, then that consultation should say so, right...?

There are regularly thousands of vehicles registered but unsold. Very much depends on market forces matching production.

After vans were like gold dust during COVID, and high prices persisting ever since, the prices have dropped dramatically this year.

Auto trader has large numbers of pre-registered diesel vans available at discounted prices.

EV registrations have had some setbacks this year, but the year-on-year figure has regularly been better than last, though that hasn't always been the message in the press.

On a side note for anyone wanting to buy an EV.

I just spend 20 minutes on Autotrader.

I filled the filter with EV only, year 2024 to new, milage to a maximum of 500 miles and various minimum & maximum prices as required.

Plenty of brand new cars where buyer will be the 1st keeper at often 10 to 20% off the RRP, amazing how they can sell these cars way below RRP.

If being 2nd keeper and 10 miles on the clock doesn't bother you, plenty at 20, 25, 30 & 33% off RRP I noticed.

Altho I'm reluctant to have an EV due public charging logistics and fuel cost becoming double my current ICE car, at 33% off a lease made up RRP number, even I may buy one, I'll keep trawling and if a nice spec EV becomes available at 40% off RRP, then yeah I'll buy one and just manage it.

From the environment stand point a poor outcome as I'll only buy a real world 350+ miles range EV whick is far too heavy and its efficiency obviously poor due weight, so a loose loose outcome, but a new hi spec EV is a nice vehicle in my opinion.
Pre COVID - 20% discounts on ICE cars had got to be almost the norm.  We got 25% off a brand new £38K BMW in 2019.

Why do you need such a high range?
I want a high range as I would probably keep car a long while and don't want to fast charge it for battery health and no home charging possibilities.

So with a heavy EV car 350+ mile range would allow easier opportunities to moderate charge, but then time limits on chargers means I'll have to drive car to avoid fines.

One basic need is way behind the curve, enough charging facilities and these should cost no more than using petrol or diesel.

For me personally, not enough chargers and about double the equivalent petrol or diesel price, so I would need 40% off current EV RRPs, I would buy a few different EVs, but currently only 30% off RRP, so I'll keep watching.

Another issue for current EVs is new technology batteries are well on their way and we could easily see 500 mile range cars in just a few years which will make these current EVs with 200/220 mile real range not very sort after.

    interesting info thanks.

yes i think the public charging companies are stiffing people right now.  Dont know if / when / how that will change.   The cost problem seems to be getting worse not better.

How can flats and terraced houses have off street parking the one's I see step straight in from the path
Where do these people park their cars now?

If you can park a car, then a charge point can be installed.

    Not rocket science is it?

Local car parks 7kw charge points for every space. No need for anything faster. Not everyone needs to charge every night.

The site about is very good for data.

The Taycan is a great example of what's happening.

Play about on that site and it's easy to see fudging of the numbers.

I didn't think we had electric commercial vehicles with sufficient range for everyone ?
Most commercial vehicles don't travel that far, so EVs may be suitable for the majority, if not everyone,

I think the poster is referring to HGVs no?

How does the range of an electric HGV compare to a diesel HGV?

The average range of the electric trucks we reviewed is 220 km, far lower than that of a diesel HGV. A typical diesel HGV can travel over 1,200 km on a full tank of diesel. This long-range, combined with a more established network of refuelling stations, is one why diesel vehicles have dominated the freight industry and it has been challenging for Electric trucks to HGVs.

The Electric HGV / Lorry Guide 2024 | Electric Car Guide

HGV range is limited by driving hours. Not the amount of fuel in the tank.
I used to be a HGV driver and one of the runs I had was 755km in one day with a electric stopping to charge 4 times in a day would be impossible
Check out Electric Trucker on U-Tube. He manages it no problem.

I was just going through that how many left site and found a bread and butter EV car that is actually pretty good, the Volkswagen ID3, but the data shows what a problem this EV introduction really is.

The uber and car rental ranks are now full of these & similar EVs, so what a party 2025 will be trying to sell or place these EVs, I'll keep looking for 40+ % off RRP EVs and may indeed buy one.
