How can flats and terraced houses have off street parking the one's I see step straight in from the path
Where do these people park their cars now?

If you can park a car, then a charge point can be installed.

    Not rocket science is it?

Local car parks 7kw charge points for every space. No need for anything faster. Not everyone needs to charge every night.
I've noticed this a lot in conversations.  Most people seem convinced you need to plug in at least every day like a mobile phone - in some cases several times a day (once for every trip).

We only do about 10,000 miles a year so we're charging 'on average' about once a week.  Obviously if you have a driveway then it adds 20 seconds to your day, none of this faffing around on a 28 mile round trip to find an open filing station (we live rural).  Plus on these icy mornings I don't have to spend 5 minutes de-icing the car.

When we first got the car we didn't have the EVSE at home for about six weeks.  It wasn't an issue - we have 22kW AC points at our local supermarkets and shopping centres.  You can plug in, do your shopping, and have a week's worth of charge (and a pre-heated car).  AC is cheaper than DC (49p/kWh) so for a 3.6kWh/m car that's the equivalent of 44mpg at £1.31 / litre of petrol.  Not great - but definitely not double.

Range anxiety was a thing on our first trip from Scotland to London - but we actually stopped five additional times to toilet the children/wife but only once to charge the car... the days of 8 hours of non-stop driving are behind me.

It might be the case in the future, that an extention lead could be drapped over peoples heads, to the parked car on the street.
But what happens if a visitor parks their car outside your terraced home or someone from up the street? I believe the average house has 3 cars. I have my own and a work vehicle, and my daughter has her car.

The site about is very good for data.

The Taycan is a great example of what's happening.

Play about on that site and it's easy to see fudging of the numbers.

    Tesla data below.

OK, just a couple of points...

HML is always a bit behind - DVLA don't release figures except quarterly, and the Q3 figures haven't been released yet, so 2024 only includes half of the calendar year.

The Taycan has been on the market four or five years now, and is no longer cutting edge. The drop in sales isn't just UK - 2023 40k sold globally, 2024 H1 8.4k, so the UK's actually holding up better than some countries. There'll probably start to be rumours about the replacement soon.

Tesla... Well, it's inseparable from St Elon, isn't it? Even beyond that image-killer, the range is now long in the tooth. The S is just about dead, only available here as LHD. The X might as well be. The 3 is rapidly approaching 8yrs old. Even the Y is closing on 5yrs old.

More and more established manufacturers are selling plugins, and more and more new EV-only manufacturers are arriving. BYD sold 7,500 cars YTD, 1,400 of them in November alone. Omoda sold a third of their annual total in November, 830 of 2,800 cars, similar monthly total to Fiat or Suzuki.

I didn't think we had electric commercial vehicles with sufficient range for everyone ?
Most commercial vehicles don't travel that far, so EVs may be suitable for the majority, if not everyone,

I think the poster is referring to HGVs no?

How does the range of an electric HGV compare to a diesel HGV?

The average range of the electric trucks we reviewed is 220 km, far lower than that of a diesel HGV. A typical diesel HGV can travel over 1,200 km on a full tank of diesel. This long-range, combined with a more established network of refuelling stations, is one why diesel vehicles have dominated the freight industry and it has been challenging for Electric trucks to HGVs.

The Electric HGV / Lorry Guide 2024 | Electric Car Guide

HGV range is limited by driving hours. Not the amount of fuel in the tank.
I used to be a HGV driver and one of the runs I had was 755km in one day with a electric stopping to charge 4 times in a day would be impossible
Check out Electric Trucker on U-Tube. He manages it no problem.
Just watched one from 2 weeks ago and I'd love to see him try in this country, first he's only carrying half the weight I used to carry, in this country we have very little truck parking so who will pay to increase that, when a truck park's up on a charger for the night he can't move for at least 9 hours so how many charging points would be needed

I've got 1 petrol car & 2 MHEV's and I aint got any intention of buying a BEV any time soon. Fortunately I could easily afford it, have lots of off street parking but am not comfortable about:-
    * Range.....don't want to be hiring a car 3 or 4 times a year when ive got a long journey or have to pre plan my stops.
    * Cost of car......the kind of EV cars that I might be interested in are mega expensive compared to petrol versions.
    * Infrastucture just isnt there......to much risk involved.
    * EV resale value/ battery life/ outdated technology are all unknowns and id prefer to stick with what I'm comfortable with.
    * I have no interest in air quality, saving the planet, improving the environment or keeping Ed Milliband happy.
    * I think it's unlikely that I'll change unless I'm forced.......& that might be some considerable time in the future.

Yes but the gully trials currently are all under-foot not over people's heads.
Using a cable gully to charge your electric car at home

The above picture is going to be a problem for many, channel frame sits proud of the kerbstone and the area surrounding it
    looks like a trip hazard.

Did someone cut it in the wrong place and make a slapdash repair?  Hope the council installed it and not yourself because
that channel is an accident waiting to happen.  Is this the next crash for cash scam in the making?

Is that an approved channel design by your council?

And that only works if you can park outside your own house, when needed. The local councils should bring in charging bays, like they have in car parks, but that is only necessary if a ICE vehicle is parked there. Overhanging booms will be better, but still a problem to park outside your own house.
Would parking bays with house numbers work?
  • I'm picturing overhanging booms.....how awful. Wouldn't want to see that personally.
  • Would parking bays with house numbers work?
How about an app?  Park outside of number 38, plug into their house and pay via the app.  5% profit to the app, 15% profit to number 38.
