When I installed my Home Assistant and got it to control the heating, I left the original thermostat on the wall. Anyone that wants to fiddle with it is more than welcome to do so. It does nothing to override the temperature settings or schedules that I've set.

  • All I can say is that the majority of replies can't be from men who are married to a wife who feels the cold extremely ! We have used ~ 1000kwh of gas so far this month for heating ,hot water and the gas hob. Based on Summer usage ,this implies ~ 700kwh for heating !!

I definitely think the forum is skewed towards people who haven't used much heating. Anecdotally, most people I work with have had the heating on at home for most of this month so must be in the range of 500-1000 kwhs for October.

Our office is heated 24/7 to around 21 degrees. It's crazy.

Given what Brewerdave was saying, this does sound a little like you are talking about your wife!

Sounds like mine. Shes complaining shes cold. Shes spent all day in either the bed room or the office, where she's currently sat with a hot water bottle. Meanwhile I'm off to the living room in t shirt and shorts.
  • 550 Kw/h on gas this month, that includes water heating and gas hob.
  • N3rgy are no longer recording my gas the .cvs spreadsheet is blank after the headings.

    The electricity spreadsheet is OK.

No idea- it comes on when it’s cold and off when it’s warm

We are in a position that we don’t  particularly have to worry about spending an extra £10-30 a month when required.
If it only costs you £10-30 for heating a month you are lucky.

For me even heating to my low temps cf many - it's easily over £100 vs summer even last winter when mild here mg heating was off for several days in Dec and Jan.

More typical cold month nearly £150 - in large part due to being all electric - even my off peak rate over double -> over treble the cost of gas now its gone low again  - or rather had been low.

My neighbour uses over 7000 kWh annually - again all electricaI - I now use less than the Ofgem median tdcv 3900 kWh on average - and last year 10% below my 5 yr average .

That heating to just 16C living room /14 C min elsewhere to stay below even tbe old 4200 kWh tdcv. Which years ago I was above.

But in order to do so I find have to triple layer to remain comfortable  - thermal long sleeved t shirt, shirt and cardigan, leggings, trousers, thermal socks / slippers .  Not quite the extremes of padded ski wear and hats etc some will go to survive at 10 or even below .

I tried lowering to 14-15 in lr, but started to get pain in back of hands after few hours at desk on pc., cheap fingerless gloves did cure that.  But decided that a step too far for me.  As if impacting one part of body, what else might it be doing elsewhere.

And I am not of OAP age or unfit as I used to be a decade or so ago - a more regular cyclist / walker even in winter.

I do turn those temp targets up when have visitors - but for their comfort - not mine.  And the energy used / bills respond accordingly.
Our combined bill averages at 170 a month. What I meant was that I’m not going to be uncomfortable and cold to save a few £ by putting off switching it on by a few weeks

If it’s cold - it goes on
If it’s warm - it goes off

As I said, I’m fortunate that I can concentrate my time, effort and concerns on other things in life as opposed  to spending hours on end trying to save a few £ here and there.

As I’ve learnt the last 18months - life can be too short

    (edit)

Im also lucky that I just don’t feel the cold. Currently out walking with just jeans and tshirt and perfectly warm.
The Mrs on the other hand is cold all the time - mebbe she’s a reptile

So glad I’m not the only one with high gas usage. 866kWh so far this month.
Couple in our 70s in sprawling 4 bed bungalow. Gas CH, HW & hob, electric oven(s). Hive stat set to 19 8.30-12 & 16-21.30. Little used rooms TRVs at min. This month heating has come on every day, for between 1 & 4.5 hours.
