How much heating have YOU used in October?

  • 502kwh according to Edf - I'd say compared to most of my friends/family my house is quite cold so quite surprised at all the people saying they only put it on at 15 or 16 that's far too cold!

Set on thermostat 12 months of year but of course end of May - mid September it rarely comes on. Temperature varies throughout day 12 over night, 17 early morning,  18 at lunchtime if wfh and 19.5 for a couple of hours just before bed. The WHO recommends 18 at all times but I'd be far too hot overnight. The 17 in morning is a little cheat , it was at 18 but I found I got cold at midday so by upping it at this time I don't feel cold somehow. I will put leggings on under clothes and layer up if cold at my desk . I also have electric throw but I've only used that one evening so far. I have been known to bring electric airer through to my living room if I feel cold at work and have clothes too dry.

Days I am in and out of house eg Saturdays I will drop thermostat to 16 , if I am in for a couple of hours and I  notice I'm cold I'll up it 18 for an hour or 2 .

From 2019 when I was in office full time too 2020 I noticed no uplift in my gas bills at all, so no point letting house get too cold. As you just spend extra heating the house up when you do decide to switch it on . I'm on central Scotland so quite jealous of all those saying it's 20 outside that's ships definitely sailed for the year!

We're in the Mid Southish England 😂 2 Bedrooms.

We don't have gas in our new place, very different experience.

I've only had a small heater on when I wasn't well in one room. Otherwise I've warn my Oodie and/or blankets, I do get quite cold in general. Cold also affects my body and can cause pain and breathing issues but I still try very hard not to use it.

With gas central heating, you should really have it on even on very low, then it can heat up if needed and it will help protect your pipes. Hence why when a lot of people go away in the colder months and they turn it off, they have issues when they turn it back on and plumbers seem a lot busier.

We do have reptiles though, they need their heaters all year around, so they are always warm and cosy, whilst we are not haha.
Thank you to everyone who posts competitions and good luck to everyone who enters.

  • North West England in a 2-bed mid terrace - just me and some pets (who already have fur coats on) so no heating used yet but I have used my heated throw a little bit most days in October as I work from home and have a dodgy knee which benefits from heat. Gotta love middle age! I've just checked my smart plug and the electric throw has used 7.5 kWh this month - so about £1.80 ish I think.

I don't have a thermostat so my heating has to be turned on manually (or a timer if used daily) and generally I don't really think about doing it until at least November, but it's obviously temperature dependent rather than calendar dependant. I'm not someone who feels the cold that much at this time of year - I find it pretty comfortable living/working in a room 14-16 degrees. Today my thermometer tells me it's 16.6 in my lounge and 15 degrees outside.

Last year, I used just under 700 kWh across the whole 3 months of Oct - Dec 2023 and can't really see this year being much different unless it's significantly colder. About 100kWh of that will have been hot water (judging by my summer use) and the rest GCH heating.
  • 4 bed house, Somerset, couple, teenager & 2 lodgers, heating is set to about 18 but it's only kicked in a couple of times this month. It's not the warmest of houses only the lounge & older side of the house are warm rooms.

I think this is the first year I've never used any heating at all in October.

The dehumidifier I brought acts as a weak heater as well, at this time of year definitely enough to bring a room up to t-shirt type temperatures.  There is a structural issue increasing internal humidity, its a lot harder to manage it in winter.
