Been following this thread from the start - but didnt really know what I could say at the time as I'm not the most eloquent of writers and was a bit ashamed that I couldnt put together any decent words of encouragement.
I feared the worst from the 1st few posts - but now that (god willing) things look so bright and encourageing, I feel confident enough to post on this thread.
All the best Rick - you made us weep - you made us frightened about our own young relatives - but you also have given us hope and no doubt when our own lives may take a 'dip', we shall take inspiration from you.
Get well soon Rick0 -
What Wonderful news about Rick - Bet he has the whole ward cheered up by the end of the weekend! Good Idea too to see if he can be moved closer to the other youngster - hope its possible soon
And well done on winning the competion too thats wonderful! Bet its great to have the security!
PS cant believe you have time to post comfort & encouragement too others too when you have so much on your plate -Thank you (((hugs)))

hopefully going in tonight if i can find a babysitter.
spent the afternoon making a spaghetti bolognese from scratch with loads of lovely veg in it, so wizzed some down in the processor (like weaning stage 1)and going to take it in to rick in a child size bowl. (so that he doesn't feel daunted) as his throat hurts when swallowing. i didnt know whether to make some cheese sauce and add that too just for the extra calories.

i am off to the sports shop tomorrow just to get him some tracky's, as the clothes he has at the moment looks like he's off to paint the house:D.Give blood - its free0 -

In response to people snoring, can he use earplugs, the sort of things Boots have. Might just help him get a better night's sleep. Agree with other posters, that he needs to be close to younger people, certainly think it is worth asking the staff.
Although he has lost a lot of weight, once he starts eating properly again, he will slowly gain weight.
Thanks once again for the update and hope he enjoyed your spaghetti bolognese.0 -
Aw Rick is doing well I'm sure Rick will enjoy your cooking
I really hope his best friend has been able to go and see him
Thank you so much for taking the time in giving us your very important update0 -
Hi
So glad to hear of Rick's improvement. Definitely worth asking if Rick can be moved closer to the other youngster. It's been a rocky road for all of you, but he now seems to be making steady progress.
I hope you had a lovely visit last night and that he was able to enjoy the spag bol. Nothing better then good home made stuff to start getting him eating. It was a very good idea to puree it for him. He wouldn't be worried about struggling to swallow with his poor sore throat.
It was lovely to hear your little lad had asked for school prayers and even more so that the school had supported him with it. What with that, and the prayers from all of us here, he couldn't help but grow stronger.
I Send him love from me and my family (DS has CFS/ME so understands a little of how Rick's feeling) and tell him to take it steady - he'll get there soon.DMP mutual support thread No: 433 - Mortgage - £54,556, Credit cards - £4012, Unsecured loan - £3,376, Other - £419

went in last night - he was waiting to show my hubby his walking so he gave us a delighted demonstration - to the end of the room with zimmer!!!!! it totally exhausted him and then went back to the bed for a little oxygen.
the other (lot older) men in his ward were really "jeering" him on and giving him loads of encouragement- it was, i can imagine a bit like being at a horse race they way they were encouraging him!!!
he has lost his hair at the back of his head (like a baby does when laying down).
i spoke to the nurses - they wont move him due to infection risks. i had to mention too about the mess around his bed (spillages and dirty cups / tissues etc). but they were not really interested by the response. Its not just rick's bed area which is dirty but it appears that all the other beds have some rubbish hanging around. i took away his breakfast orange juice (yes 8pm last night!!). and threw it away!!! he had a little to eat but only a couple of mouthfuls (which is his norm).
his girlfriend has been in this week as has his best friend they were too scared to come in before, to which he understands, they have been bringing him in a mcdonalds strawberry milkshake everytime, to which he is having a go at drinking.
he had his haircut yesterday ( a bit strange looking one at that) but going to get his some gel in a bit so that he can prune himself. he is on his mobile phone (with permission) and is texting all his mates.
he is annoyed that one of his mates (not close) has taken his part time gamekeeping job- but we explained that the job would still need to be done and he couldn't do it at the moment.
spoke about christmas yesterday - mentioned that we're wanting to have it again for him and that he can have a party too for all his mates. he opened a couple of presents yesterday - chocolates - to which he was almost gagging at the thought of eating - he has really developed a distaste for chocolate amongst other things, so we took them home for him.Give blood - its free0 -
Fantastic news about his "walking demonstration". Really pleased for him and his family. Hopefully in a few days, he will be able to get around a bit more and will be able to speak to other younger patients as he can't be moved.
My dad actually went bald where he had been lying in bed, but it did all grow back
and from what I can remember, it didn't take too long.
It does make you wonder though when you say they won't move him due to infection risk. Sounds like there is more rick of infection from the general mess around the beds anyway.
Anyway keep up the good work and I am sure he is enjoying the HM food. I know dad certainly did even though he only ate a couple of mouthfuls, he would rather wait until we visited as he knew he would enjoy whatever we brought in for him.0 -
I don't understand what the nurse was on about they cannot move Rick because of the infection risks because when my mam has been in hospital you see people being moved all the time to different wards because they need the bed .
Well done Rick we are so proud of you .0
