Q1. How do Fuse Energy estimate/calculate your gas consumption on a day to day basis when you do not have a smart gas meter that they can remotely access to obtain actual daily meter readings?

Just joined for gas only for my new address. They wanted £400 up-front as failed credit check. Got in touch via live chat who ran the credit check at my previous address and the £400 was waived. Hopefully straighforward from now.

They're one of few that offer variable DD with no upfront initial payment. I suppose they don't want anyone using a huge amount of energy in the first month and getting in arrears, hence the caution appllied to some.

I know you can get fixed DD with them if you want.

They work from your estimate to begin with. Then its simply a case of you pay for what you use. Its a fixed tariff but not spread monthly across a year. Each month they tell you want your bill is. Issue it and it then does 1 of 3 things. 1) you have enough balance already in account as topped it up it stops DD automatically reduces this. 2) you have no top up so takes the DD or 3) it does part and part as you dont have enough but have some. I came from company who spread it over a year so I got a bit worried re budgeting so I just on payday go to fuse app click bank transfer and pay in money. Bill generates it takes from it so im building up a cash reserve for winter. They ask you for readings as you go whilst waiting for my smart meter to connect so they will just continue tjis process if you dont have one ! I had to upload a photo in app of reading

I recommend using a savings account with your bank to build up cash reserves and let each bill be taken monthly by DD rather than send the money to them directly. That way, they'll never owe you money when you decide to switch supplier.

Q2. How do Fuse Energy calculate the value of the gas you have consumed in a given month?

Let's assume, for the sake of argument, they have an actual start meter reading, and an actual end meter reading (for the month being charged) and that they can correctly subtract the start reading from the end reading to obtain a correct quantity of gas consumed in m3. Take it step by step from there please. How exactly is that then converted into an amount billed.

Not much point in topping up an MVDD energy account. Why give them the interest when you could benefit yourself? Bung it in an Instant Access savings account. OK, the interest won't make you rich, but it's the principle and every little helps.

Secondly, if you allow a big credit to build up and your energy company suddenly goes bust, it could be quite a long time before you get all your money back. That's especially true if the company had poor records. No reason to believe either of those scenarios is likely to apply to Fuse, but around 30 companies went bust a few years ago and there was a lot of aggro all round.

Looking further back, no-one thought big names Pan-Am and Woolworths would disappear, so nothing is ever certain.
