Weekly FLYLADY Thread 15 January 2024

What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole task easier and quicker. We also accept that, sometimes, life just gets on top of us and we can't keep up, maybe because we're time-poor, not in the best of health and/or we have littlies who need us. We are definitely NOT control freaks aiming for perfection and utterly spotless show-homes.
Welcome to the weekly Flylady Thread. You're more than welcome to join us in the everlasting battle against dust, grime and gibble. The aim of our thread is to make those onerous tasks less daunting, and to support each other - and to make time for the finer things in life!
Please do remember we have to abide by MSE rules; each post should, ideally, include some mention of flying.
Thank you Natty for last week's thread.
Please follow the forum rules on this thread as Flylady has been here a LONG time and is a fabulous support and resource for lots of us. All posts should have some Flylady-related (ooh a compound adjective) content!
The idea is that even if you are really busy you don't need to fall off the wagon!
Every room comes back around next week so please don’t stress about catching up
These lists are only suggestions and not a must do list; you are more than welcome to post and follow your own lists.
Also adding a declutter mission each day will help to gradually clear the clutter and make flying easier.
A few of the basics before we start the week
Hotspots are areas where if one thing gets put there, loads of other things follow!
Daily routines are anything you need to do on a daily basis like washing, swish and swipe kitchen and bathroom, ironing, making beds, vacuuming high traffic areas, making meals etc.
Night-time routines are all things which make getting ready in the morning easier, preparing clothes for the next day, making lunches, swish & swipes of the kitchen and tidying the living room before you go to bed plus personals like shower/brush teeth etc.
Fling Boogie - stick on some loud music, grab a bin bag and whiz around the house finding items that can go out with the rubbish, recycling, for charity shop, basically anything that will stop it cluttering your home.
Swish and swipe/S&S means have a quick wipe over an area such as a sink or toilet to prevent the build up of dirt. This is usually done on a daily basis
HHE/HHC/HHI Half Hour exercise/challenge/ironing ... run around for 30 minutes to the Benny Hill music frantically cleaning exercising or ironing.. .other music may be used if you prefer!
WM ~ Washing machine
TD ~ Tumble dryer
SC ~ Slowcooker
BM ~ Breadmaker
DW ~ Dishwasher
SOAADFA ~ Sit on 'bottom' and do 'nothing'
KH/XH/FW ~ Ex-husband and other not so polite versions
DH/DD/DS/DW/DP ~ Dear husband/daughter/son/wife/partner/whatever
OH/SO ~ Other half/significant other
NN ~ nice neighbour
Toxic (friend/mother/sister/whoever) ~ person in your life that seems to exist to make your life miserable
AF ~ Aunt Flo 'time of the month'.. nothing to do with flying but it comes up often.
ETA ~ Edited to add
Gibble ~ miscellaneous crap that appears forever homeless
Dot-to-dot ~ pick a small area (not a whole room) like a chair/coffee/table/shelf/worktop or wherever- that’s your first 'dot' - totally clear it - clean it - and only put back what should be there - deal with what you have removed (not just move it somewhere else) then if you have time move on and do the same to another 'dot' -the idea is just like a dot to dot puzzle, you aim to join up all the dots and have a tidy room. The trick is to keep each dot tidy until you get them all joined up! All credit to AnW's Mum for this one
RoD ~ Room of Doom, the one room that feels like it is a permanent pit and cannot be used to its potential!
MAD half hour
- Mad is the abbreviation for Make A Difference.
The idea is that you have a Forth bridge (ie never-ending - or just huge) task but that you work on it in half-hour bursts. This way you know you ARE stooping, and that you won't get it finished but you will make a difference - so it might be clearing out - the garage or shed, or clothes sorting, or weeding - you get the picture - but rather than keep going until you've lost the will to live you do half an hour...but, eventually those half hours will get the job done!

Thank you Valli x
I have tweaked the shelves and everything is much better now.
I haven't started replacing the zip in M's fleece yet, but I need better daylight. Tomorrow I'm hoping to put in a couple of hours of photo sorting before going to Action Heart and then calling in on an old friend for a cuppa on the way home, so the fleece will have to wait another day.
Hope you all have a good week and are ready for whatever the weather gods throw at us xxx9 -
TY for Fred..
I have 2 small grandbeasts tomorrow afternoon and every monday for 12 weeks..Wednesdays are lost to Squeaks CBT Saturdays to dance/swimming.. Sundays to getting ready for Monday so I down to 3 days a week to fit as little in as I can get away with.

thanks for lists.
YL I hope your cycle brightened your mood a bit. I woke to no frost or snow, so had a lovely swim (4 degrees in and out). Got back in plenty of time for a coffee and change before church. While I was in church, a friend commented on my fingerless gloves and said it would be great for boaters (she is the Waterways Chaplain I mention from time to time). I said I'd just finished some for a friend and would be happy to do more. I feel quite motivated as they don't take long, is better for me than playing with the tablet while watching TV and it is a good cause if they are going to someone who needs them. Dug in my wool collection and plan to start tomorrow.
- one load through DW, put away
- one load through WM, dried pretty much on washing line outside.
- yesterday's dry clothes put away.
- crumble made to take to friend's for dinner
- bit more of a report done
- drumming practice done.
- downloaded more books onto Kindle and returned those I've read.
Not sure what else I did !
Have a good week everyone.Remember...a layer of dust protects the wood beneath it.10 -
Morning all
Thank you so much Valli for the thread and pick n mix, my fave!!! You read my mind xxx
Up early today because I have a huge amount of things to get through. I particularly need to plough through a lot of paid stuff and chop the 7 pallets I was given at the weekend. We are set for -7 DURING THE DAY 😳😳😳and heavy snow ⛄️ tomorrow so both fires will be working overtime.
My budget spreadsheet needs updating as soon as DS is awake (laptop in his room), I seem to have spent a lot this last week but it is all bills etc so essential. Just need to update the S/S accordingly.I have a load of laundry to do which I will put on shortly. Cuppa in bed first though.YL I am sorry you’re feeling so wobbly. My inbox is always open xx
Piggers I desperately wish we could have FSM for primary children country wide for all of the year groups. I just cannot afford the £3 a day school charges for a hot lunch, but I particularly dislike sending him with packed lunches in winter time. I sent pesto pasta in a flask once and didn’t realise it wasn’t allowed for H&S reasons. Will pop back later no doubt, take care all and wrap up warm xxx10 -
Morning all
No DW run as it was nowhere near full. WM run which I will peg out for a lighten. Paid stuff this morning via Morrisons as I want to put cream on my itchy feet after swimming. I want to finish project 1 but that will depend on whether the light is good enough as i have to pick up stitches. otherwise i will be working on project 2 while watching TV later.
Bathroom tiles/grout/sealant look SO much better.
Hope you all have a good day.

Morning everyone, thank you for the lovely shiny new thread Valli. Well all my best laid plans of mice and men didn't go quite right at the weekend..lol.Spent a good part of the time on the sofa watching the birds in our garden - it's quite a haven for different bird varieties and is so lovely to see, especially as in our old house we hardly saw more than two varieties 😉 When I wasn't doing that I was asleep on the sofa..But I'm up with a vengeance this morning, having puppy time before DH gets up then I'll have my shower and get on with today's things to do.I've also finally got round to Econsulting my Drs regarding my meds going over to generic and not my usual branded ones I had before I changed Drs, and them not working. I had been putting it off as I didn't want to be a pain but as my new surgery still hasn't got my medical records after three months I'm having to bring it up. Plus they won't be aware how serious my mental health actually is.. Apparently it takes an age for drs records from England to move to your new Welsh drs. Gods only knows why...
Today's list comprises of:- Defrosting chicken for tonight's dinner
- Clear out my car ready to be taken away when my new one arrives
- Change the bedding
- Wash load
- Walk the Pocket Rocket
- Wipe down the kitchen worktops
- Make apple crumble for pudding tonight
- Tidy up living room
- Try not to swear at the heating in this house!!!
Hope everyone is ok and you are all plodding on in your own way xxxMortgage Free as of 20.9.17Declutter challenge 2023, 2024 🏅 🏅⭐️⭐️

Good morning my lovelies xx
Must be cold outside as my heating clicked on as I was getting up. I'm starting the week with a smile as I've decluttered 4 lbs. And my dust free stairs and landing carpet merit a smile too. 😊
I'm up, made my bed, got weighed, taken my meds, and supped a brew.
Round 1
Brew 2 and breakfast
Get dressed
Remove clothes from radiators, FUPA
Feed the birds
Put out the recycling
WUDUPA
That'll do for starters.
Get ya thermals on and well wrapped up if you're going out this week. I've calculated that I can manage without a Mr Al. shop today.....eating less equals enough in the freezer / cupboards to last another week. Bit of mental meal planning gone on too.
Get me hoovering and meal planning! I'll make the Flylady grade one day 😊
Take care

Morning all, It's another cold day here. I am ready to get started this week as I had an enjoyable night out with DH and our kids for a family meal last night so my motivation seems to have returned.
My list for today
Get dressed
Feed the animals
Get the kids to school
Empty the TD as the second load from yesterday was just left in the machine overnight
Wash up dishes, dry and put away
Package up the item that needs to be returned and sort required paperwork.
Take the returns package to the post office and send it back
Paid stuff
Get shampoo whilst in town as forgot to order from Mr T
Check gutters and drains to ensure clear of debris.
Check over the car tyres, coolant, and screen wash
Get petrol in the car for this week.
Get the number for the self-service garage as wrongly took money last week, so I will need to phone them to reclaim it.
Give the car a quick wash
Send an email regarding recycling bin collection (I'm working with a local charity recycling which helps them to raise funds)
Attend uni class this afternoon
Check banking and update the budget
Clean mirrors in the bathroom
Declutter 50 emails from inbox
Clean the loo and put some bleach in
Wipe down the door including the handles
Wipe the bathroom switch
HHI
Sort lunches/bags/clothes for tomorrow
Think that is everything that I need to tackle today, I best finish my cuppa and get started as it's going to be a busy one. Hope everyone has a lovely Monday and a productive week.

*tiptoes in sheepishly and sits at the back as if I have been here all the time......*
Good morning 😁 It has been a while!
Since I was last here I have had the dreaded visit from Ofsted (lady was lovely, all was good 👍), had a beautiful summer wedding & gained another SiL, had a week in Valliland around DGS birthday (July - cold & wet!) & a week in Copenhagen in Sept (glorious weather! Returned with covid 😕) House still needs decluttering....especially toys!
I have read through last week's thread to catch up a bit.....hugs, sticks & spoons available to all that need them.
Ok - on with this week.....
Round 1 (using Round's method of bitesize chunks!)
Get up! (Monday is still the weekend here!)
Shower & hair wash
Breakfast
Empty DW
DH is off to his volunteer role at a local mental health charity (he is hoping to get a job there, as he is hating his real job!), and then we need to do the food shop later (oh joy!) I like to get a few bits done while he is out 😁 Last week I sorted the tupperware cupboard! It is still tidy & sometimes I open it just to look at it! 😂
Have a good day everyone11 -
Not feeling it today at all but home alone so should make an effort
I've 2 loads of washing to sort plus want to get sofa blankets done if it can
Will clean toilets and sinks plus an extra job in each bathroom
Mattress protector needs putting back on
I've already emptied dishwasher and meal planned next few days as want to finish stuff in freezer that's open before a Iceland order later in week as have a voucher9
