@badmemory - oh my that is quite the idiom! I've been chuckling about it since yesterday!
I remember as a young teenager buying the prettiest little underthing sets with my hard earned part-time job money! My mother was shocked - thought I was up to 'no good' at my co-ed high school and that I'd go to hell in a hand-basket. My Gran on the other hand, the stylish fashion maven of the family encouraged me to carry-on as she believed a little self-vanity never hurt! I hold her advice dear, after all when she was in the hospital for life-end care, she insisted on having both a mani/pedi and 'set' hair on a regular basis. It was very amusing considering she could not feed herself at that point! - but she looked good and felt good!4 YEARS 10 MONTHS DEBT FREE!!! (24 OCT 2016)(With heartfelt thanks to those who have gone before us & their indubitable generosity.)...and now I have a mortgage! (23 AUG 2021)New projection - 14 YEARS 10 MONTHS LEFT OF 20 YEARS (reduced by 15 mths)Psst...I may have started a diary!9 -
Funnily enough that was always our description of this house when we bought it 'fur coat, no knickers', in that it looked lovely from the outside but needed work and money on just about everything inside and really wasn't fit to be seen. No real kitchen, 1970s avocado tiled bathroom, and so on. These days she is at least reasonably dressed underneath even if her clothes could do with a little care.
Still slowly filling the skip. A pile of things to list on the village free pages later. A pile for the local charity shop. Its a bit easier making decisions now than it was six months ago. Do I regret exiting anything? Not really, although I may have binned my motorcycle helmet cover and charger with his. It is not like I will ever ride pillion again so it doesn't matter but it would be easier to rehome usefully with its charger. I don't always remember what I did with things from the immediate aftermath which isn't surprising. This second pass is a lot more ruthless as it is less raw. Both PIP and Blackcats have made good points elsewhere about this and making a conscious decision to gently let things go.
I did take the spare pack of flooring back which generated a £75 refund. That particular branch of the orange DIY store was ironically the last place we went together and the very long queue meant I got to stand and think about it. Held it together till I got to the car at least, then lost it at supermarket music which set me off again. So many memories being triggered at the moment.
Head down, batter on. I'd pull up my big girl pants but the new ones have arrived...My mortgage free diary: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6498069/whoops-here-comes-the-cheese

Glad you got some new knickers. Laughing at all the loose knickers (elastic obviously) stories.
I think things might be easier this time round for decluttering but there will always be things that will trigger you. You're doing an amazing job of it all.
I need a skip but I'm glad I read your diary. ...I have plaster to go in it so I'm betting we need to just do a tip run instead then 🤔MORTGAGE BALANCE when we moved Aug 2024, £120,000. I have no sympathy for an avocado bathroom, when I bought this house in 1990 the bathroom suite was brown. With a single male owner that said the stain on his downstairs carpet was his alsatian & the carpet cleaner said it was not! Both went PDQ.8

I've been going through my pants drawer recently thinking that much is too worn even to be cut up for dusters. When there is order in my pants drawer, there is order in my life. This year have bought 3 bras from the big girls' shop Br*vvi**imo and it's changed my life. You're doing brilliantly @redofromstart, keep going. Love Humdinger xx7
