Watty's Awakening

Further chaos at Watty's place. On my list was "cleaning the carpets and sofas" and the man is here today. He asked that I would remove all the furniture I could and hoover the room with carpets. Somehow that did not seem so much when he casually mentioned it but it took most of yesterday to sort out. Everything upstairs is in the bathroom or on the beds. It was a good chance to declutter some more and the car is full of donations, some stuff sold and a daybed that I got for free was donated to another home (I had to ask the carpet cleaner to help get the last bit out of the house).
The sockets have finally been sorted out over the weekend and a few more pictures hung and the living room was put back together for a visitor Friday evening. I have decided to let the TV in the living room go. I rarely watch it. I prefer the room without one. Although at the moment it is on the dining room table due to the cleaning process.

Commiserations on the 🐴 🐎 Must feel never ending. How's MH 🐎?
Most Handsome has had a jumping lesson and been for a hack with a neighbour. He is doing really well for a retired pony and was as silly as he ever was. Someone commented how nervous I was with Most Handsome which is true. I trust the Charming Cob totally and have no doubt that together we can do anything (within reason). Most Handsome however is too much of a drama queen to be trusted to walk sensibly down the roadand had to be escorted on his hack by the neighbour whose horse normally relies on Charming Cob to be sensible.
There was much eye rolling from both the neighbour and her horse at Most HandsomeMade it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In other news the VNM's mother is still struggling. She rang Friday evening late to say she felt sick. One of my girlfriends was visiting and much fizz and been consumed so no one was able to drive and check on her. We both went Saturday morning and then Saturday evening she rang again. We were out with friends for dinner and it turned out she had rung to insist her hospital appointment was cancelled. It is today and I was very proud of the VNM who simply said you are going and I shall take you and that is an end to it. He has bought her a wheelchair to overcome her objection she cannot walk to appointments although it has not yet arrived. I do know one can be hired from the Red Cross but I'm trying hard not to get too involved now.
The VNM and I have agreed that we will not share any bottles of wine for a while. That way if we are together then one of us can always drive to check on her (it is too far to get a taxi) and we won't worry about her. I do realise she won't really be happy until he moves in with her but for now things muddle on.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

Sounds a frustrating situation.
Hope things improve soon. Good you've been able to get on with the house decor. I feel you on the hoovering as mine is well overdue!Achieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

As it has rained since the carpet cleaner left the idea that nice warm air would blow the open windows was rather a fantasy. I seriously considered spending last night in a hotel as it smelt rather like every room was the inside of a wet washing machine. If I ever do this again somewhere i will plan so that i can do just that!
Last night I ended up standing the furniture on my bed on towels just to have somewhere to sleep. This morning I have put the heating on in bedrooms all day at 26 C which should finish the drying.
Still the £360 spent to return the sofa to its original colour and save me carpeting at least 2 bedrooms was so worth it. The main bedroom will do another year now and to his credit he worked really hard on the stains that reminded me of the ex (I briefly explained why i wanted the ones were he used to drop shower get etc to go). I think as I now get the finished rooms straight it will all look so much better.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

I had the carpets cleaned here and it was well worth it. One he didn't do, as he said it was too far gone and it would be a waste of money (very deep pile with a lot of wear) - when we took it out both carpet and underlay stank! Once it all dried the house smelled much better too. Nine months later, although the stains are gone, there are two carpets where the smell has returned, so they are on the list to be replaced, but it got me and extra 9 months out of them and made it clear which ones needed replacing and which ones didn't.
Once I've recovered from the next round of work (electricians, heating engineers, flooring, decorating) then a professional oven clean is on the cards!7 -
@Watty you can put your furniture back on damp carpets if you put kitchen foil under the feet. You will get dents, obviously, but the foil protects the carpet from wood feet bleeding and making stains.

I obviously wouldn't encourage drinking if you're not feeling to but it sounds like you had a lovely evening and she managed perfectly well without being dashed to on her whim- so well that she wanted to then cancel her hospital appointment. Of course it's the decent thing to do to tend to her 'needs' if appropriate but I'd be very wary of you and VNM restricting your enjoyable time available just in case she decides you haven't been paying her enough attention, which sounds like it'll be a regular thing. Taxis and ambulances exist if they're genuinely needed.
The carpet cleaning will be worth it shortly! Well done on all your get-it-done hard work7 -
