We have had a laptop that is guilty of serial breakdowns in the shape of an Advent. It broke down some 3 times in 3 years
Thankfully PC World made such a cockup of the repair and service to back it up that they sent us vouchers for a replacement (their 6 week rule was invoked). The machine was at the cusp of the extended warranty running out.
We now have an HP Pavilion bought with the vouchers they sent us - excellent machine!Behind every great man is a good womanBeside this ordinary man is a great woman£2 savings jar - now at £3.42:rotfl:0 -
i have to agree with the above posters , i got a laptop for my dd earlier year and it's been fine
you have got more positive posters here than on the link0 -
The only problem I have with an Acer is how to pronounce the name. Is is "acker" or "aiser" or something in between? Apart from that, it does what can be reasonably expected of it for a relatively inexpensive and simple computer.0

I purchased an Acer laptop in April, and it has been great. It's an Aspire 5633, with the spec below.
The only doubt I had when purchasing the laptop was whether to go for Vista or XP, and I decided to stay with XP because Vista was unproven and demanded more graphics resources.
After using the laptop, I found the DVD writer a bit fiddly to use, and I would have preferred a battery that could hold more charge and last longer before needing recharging. Other than these two minor points, the Acer is Ace!- Intel Centrino Core DuoT5500 Processor 1.66 GHz

I don't think this thread is going the way the OP intended. My girlfriend's ACER laptop is giving good service and a friend has just bought another.0

i think you were just unlucky my friend. If you brought a Ferrari and it went wrong would you say Ferrari are crap?
Acer is a superb quality brand as others have stated.i am pleased to report your i.q test came back negative0 -
from reading the link it seems the op must have dropped or seriously damaged the thing to need a new keyboard, screen, mobo and psu. you can hardly fault acer build quality if you play football with the thing.
regarding the repair service, well if you need that much done it cheaper just to get a new laptop.0 -

It depends which Ferrari you bought, an Acer Ferrari are actually reasonable laptops. The Farrari cars are great cars.
I actually find the build quality is pretty poor on lower end Acer laptops but when you consider they cost almost !!!!!! all what do you want. It is the same with everything you get what you pay for spend more on a laptop and you get a better laptop. Spec wise they are ok but they are on the same lines of the entry level Dells Why do the better brands sell their entry level laptops for about £100 more? becasue they are built better. All the other bits inside cost about the same maybe they get better discounts from Intel, or the other component manufactureres but there is a difference when it comes to the quality of the hinges, keyboard and the caseings use more metal and not plastic.
But to the OP you can't claim that all acer laptops are crap, not everyone treats laptops the way they should be treated chucking them about etc the better built laptops will take some stick but there is a limit with those also.0 -
I've got an Acer 5051. Very good for what I paid (£280). Not had a single problem.
It does lack power (in terms of processing) and battery life, but at £280 I knew not to expect the best. I can still run Ubuntu with Vista running in a virtual machine, doing .Net development without any problems though.
There will always be people that have bad experiences. It won't be with just Acer, I'm sure Dell have their fair share."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
What makes me laugh is that there's only actually a handful of laptop manufacturers anyway and lots of stuff is badged as appropriate. For example, Gericom, Clevo and Advent are the same kit.
Good to see the Lenovo (formerly IBM) brand still retaining its high build quality status (after a Chinese takeover .BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!
