    Hi everybody, newbie here...

Like everyone else on here i'm trying to cancel Setanta but can't get through. Been on the phone this afternoon for 1 hour & 4 mins.
Would it be worthwhile for me to ring my credit card company & ask them to stop payments..? I know that they would ask me to sort it out with the merchant even though i'm having problems getting through.
But if then i said stuff your credit card, send me my final statement & i'll pay it off in full would Setanta be able to sue me for "monies owing" ?
The way i'm feeling right now it might be the only way i can get rid finally of these Setanta fraudsters...

If you've given Setanta your credit card details in order to pay your monthly premium, then cancelling your card won't stop the charges I'm afraid. It's called continuous authority, and the only way to cancel it is to get the merchant to stop asking for the money. You'll still be billed for any continuous authority transactions even after your credit card account is "closed".

Did get in touch with my cc company, Lloyds/TSB.

They told me that i could block the card from any further usage & that they would send me out a new card & new pin number & that Setantas monthly charge would not carry over to the new card unless i gave them (Setanta) a new authorisation to do so.

I asked the lady, "Are you certain that that is the case & they can't just enforce payments onto my new card..?" She checked & said that was the case.

I like many others rung them early-march to cancel my contract & was taken in by the £5 a month deal...that is until they continued charging my card £9.99. I've also sent them a recorded letter today with my cancellation details & telling them that they deliberately misled me with the £5 a month offer for 2 months & that was in contravention of their own T & Conditions.

Hope that is the end of my dealings with this company but somehow i doubt it.

Hehe - know this well, I had to create a 3 way call Setanta, Visa & me so the Visa supervisor could witness me making the cancellation call. Needless to day Setanta charged my card again, had Visa refer to their own records to prove the cancellation took place. It would be nice if Visa struck Setanta off.

At least !!!!!! Turpin wore a mask.

YES I am afraid, they are on my hitlist
Spoke with shitanta on 8th March - cancelling my £9.99 a month. I also wrote and e-mailed them as it highlights in their terms and conds to write in with cancellation.
My biling date is - 11th of the, the highlighted that March would be last payment.
April 11th came - £9.99 goes out of my set up credit card - the gits.
Just spoke to them now - 15th April - they advise they have no record of cancellation -even though, i spoke, emailed and wrote to them.....they agreed to cancel my account - how kind..but highlighted i would have to pay May 11th............. But i could write to head office to see if i could get some money back . think we should bombard head office with millions of letters!!!!!!
    So heres hoping!!!!
they are really getting it al wrong - short term gains for them, but long term pains i hope!!!!!

    Dear Sirs,

    Customers Name: xxxxxxxx
    Address: xxxxxxxxx

I refer to the above address and would now like now to convey a few problems which i have experienced with regards to receiveing Setanta at a cost £9.99 per month to my property. These problems have now not only resulted in my termination of the direct debit with you but has resulted in me now wishing to seek a full refund for all the monthly direct debits I have paid in full and without fail to you since xxxxxxxxx

Since signing up over 7 months ago i have been unable to watch a single match due to poor picture quality and a lack of signal. On occassion when i do receive a signal the picture sticks every few seconds making the channel unwatchable. i have phoned your offices on several occassion with regards to this and you have have tried to send further signals. I beleive I should have been advised long ago that there is no point in me paying £9.99 for a channel i cant watch, but at no time either on the phone or by letter has your office advised me that I should simply cancel my Direct Debit or at the very least discussed futher options with me. You have simply continued to take my money knowing I was not receiveing satisfactory viewing.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and i look forward to receiving your quick response. Please find undernoted my email address for your convenience.

    yours faithfully
    xxxxxxx

  • Just typed into google to find the address for setanta, this thread came up, after reading every one elses problem, I'm very much in the same situation, about to send my letter tomorrow, asking for a refund. I spent around an hour waiting on the phone one afternoon, then rang the subscribing number got through straightaway, I was charged 9.99 for March, when my subscription was cancelled for February and I stopped recieving the channel in March. If I dont get a refund, I suggest, every one here should team up and do something about this, the amount isnt large, but the principle to me is sickening.

I cancelled the direct debit a few months ago via my online banking and I let them do the legwork. I got a call asking why I had cancelled and basically told them they are c£$p!

Never seemed to show the big Premier League games. They seem to be pretty desperate now with the £5 a month offer, especially with the football season coming to an end.
  • Well I just got through on the phone and cancelled.

When I signed up it was £15, about 2 days later they rolled out the £10 per month so I was a bit peed off. Told me I was tied in to 12 months.

Just checked that contract letter and it's over 12 months. Suprisingly they never wrote to me to let me know and continued to bill me £15 so they have not done too bad.

When I told them I was cancelling they told me they would deduct another £15 next month, I told them to shove it and take me to court. Direct debit cancelled.

Haven't read this entire thread, so may be repeating others' comments, but I signed up to Setanta recently and part of the deal was the first month free, yet they debited my account immediately. When I queried this, I was told that it's advance payment for the second month, hence at each payment date I am effectively paid up for the next 2 months. Would be interested to see if they remember this should I cancel. I agree with previous comments that the best way to cancel is send a recorded letter and just cancel the DD.
