Slight smile at the thought of librarians trying to balance books...Rosa_Damascena said:
Then you definitely need to use the electronic alternative.I_Love_comps said:I never use my local library. It is too far away.
Councils are threatening to cut libraries across the country, because they cannot balance their books. The cultural and social impact of these losses will change the nation (not in a good way).
Growling as our council has announced the cutbacks they are making to library access including cutting back on their website maintenance. So less time to go to various libraries and less ability to order things from them when they are closed.
As for bad teachers....I still recall when, aged 8, a male teacher decided I'd misbehaved so picked me up (literally) and put me across his knee and spanked me while the whole class laughed. They'd be calling social services and the police if someone did that these days.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. We had a science teacher at our school who we nicknamed 'Hitler' as not only did he look like him, complete with weird haircut and toothbrush moustache as well, we thought he was evil personified.
He terrified most of the kids , I loathed him so much, I think I only turned up to around 3 or 4 lessons then I would vanish on a Friday morning when it was double science and hide in the school library, or even 'hop the wag' as we would say back in the late 1950s.
It was a very large school and once your mark was taken in the morning by the form teacher you were dispersed to other various class rooms for lessons so it was fairly easy to leg it out of the back gate. I really had zero interest in science and saw no point in doing it I much preferred english and history. Odd really as my late Father was a chemist and none of his children had the remotest interest in the subject at all. i left school in 1959 with a certificate for growing a daffodil and very little else .yet I returned to adult education in 1998 and took a handful of exams and ended up at Uni doing a degree which I absolutely loved. My grandchildren thought I'd lost the plot volunteering to go back to school at my ancient age but my fellow students were lovely, and I listened to all their woes, both boys and girls and became their adopted 'Granny'
helped them learn to feed themselves on very little and I adored every minute, yet when at school in the nineteen fifties I hated it .
Never to late to learn though

I once had a bad cold and kept sniffing. I could not help it. The teacher at the time was teaching maths and kept making a small mark at the bottom of the board with his chalk every so often, I later knew it as a "gate count" although too young to know at the time. At the end of the lesson he said in front of everyone "You sniffed xxx times during that lesson". I am sure you could not get away with that sort of thing today!!Rosa_Damascena said:
Oh how I wish!London_1 said:I retired in 1995 and we downsized to Kent from London, never felt the urge to return to work much more fun being retired and doing what you feel like I took my watch off the day I retired and have never worn one since

To those who think they might be bored ,trust me you soon forget about work and find so much more interesting things to do, even if its a nice stroll out to the park with a flask and a sandwich .No more rushing around its fantastic

@MACKEM99 - teachers got away with saying some really stupid stuff back in the day, eg "you'll never amount to anything" - which is designed to belittle. Do you remember the recruitment campaign for teachers that said "you never forget a good teacher"? Well let me tell the DfE that you never forget a bad one either, they stick in the mind alongside the worst traumas. Treat kids like that these days and they end up with a diagnosis of PSTD.6 -

There was a story on tv this morning saying a school in a deprived area had improved their A level results. I had to laugh and thought to myself they are so deprived they are taking A levels! 😃1

Its now a requirement for those between 16-18 to be in some form of education if not employment. The unintended consequence is that some may feel pushed into A-levels when there are more suitable training options out there.MACKEM99 said:There was a story on tv this morning saying a school in a deprived area had improved their A level results.
