Ours has Borrowbox and Libby - I've had to reserve some that I wanted, but even so the choice was a bit limited. Excellent, though, for choice of magazines including back numbers, though it can be hard to read some things on a Kindle-sized screen (you can magnify it but then you might have to move your 'window' around the text to read it all!)
What I find really convenient is that they automatically return when the loan is up, so no overdue fees or having to make a special journey, and I can borrow at 2am should I feel like it. I can't lose the book (!) though I've sometimes lost my details to log in, and there's a list of what I've already borrowed if I want to re-read.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. Councils are threatening to cut libraries across the country, because they cannot balance their books. The cultural and social impact of these losses will change the nation (not in a good way).No man is worth crawling on this earth.
So much to read, so little time.6 -
Don't forget that some libraries in other areas of the world will give everyone access to their online resources. My local library does and it includes the eBooks and audio books. They are working on getting magazines on line too. It is free to everyone.

I love Borrowbox from my library for audiobooks especially. Currently listening to The Marlow Murder Club (very good) as have listened previously to Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club mysteries - currently waiting for Book 3 to become available. Also in past have listened to Sue Perkins- East of Croydon; Mrs Hinch; Dave Ramsey - The Money Makeover; Carrie Brown - The Stargazers Sister (about William Herschel the astronomer and his sister); Bronnie Ware - Your Year of Change; Meik Wiking - The Little Book of Hygge and all the CJ Sansom books about Shardlake amongst others !!! Great to be able to obtain all these with just a library number.6

Good Morning chums, just caught up on the thread. Golly reading it made me feel really ancient I was married in 1962 and extremely broke
I bought a book in Woolworths called Cooking for Two, it cost me 2/6d it was a Hamlin one, and Ive still got it although sadly my lovely young husband passed in 2003.
Book reading is an absolute passion of mine, and if I'm not reading, then I'm knitting and listening to the wireless, or watching TV, (I'm a sucker for Documentaries or History programmes).
I did buy a Kindle when they first came out but wasn't mad keen on it. I tucked it away for safe keeping somewhere and blowed if I can find it, but I'm not fussed as I not only belong to a book club, but also order and read books from the library .
As I'm moving this year hopefully I've been decluttering and so far have taken four big bags for life full of books to the CS, and have another four to go.
I have kept the ones I want to, but really don't have the space to move them with me.
I retired in 1995 and we downsized to Kent from London, never felt the urge to return to work much more fun being retired and doing what you feel like I took my watch off the day I retired and have never worn one since
To those who think they might be bored ,trust me you soon forget about work and find so much more interesting things to do, even if its a nice stroll out to the park with a flask and a sandwich .No more rushing around its fantastic

I am going to start saving and being thrifty,
Also what did you all do when you were 60. I have arranged to go to see my favourite band with my hubby next year with an overnight stay. I will also arrange a family meal for family and friends on the day.
Benefits of being 60
discount off food at Iceland on a Tuesday
Not having to pay for prescriptions
I have pension coming in to which will give me more income until retirement. So I shall be putting some of that into savings.
My thriftiness starts now.8 -

@MACKEM99 - teachers got away with saying some really stupid stuff back in the day, eg "you'll never amount to anything" - which is designed to belittle. Do you remember the recruitment campaign for teachers that said "you never forget a good teacher"? Well let me tell the DfE that you never forget a bad one either, they stick in the mind alongside the worst traumas. Treat kids like that these days and they end up with a diagnosis of PSTD.No man is worth crawling on this earth.

One of the best teachers I remember use to throw chalk at us if we were talking, if we kept it up it was then the board eraser thrown at us, and if you still carried on he use to hit the table in front of you with the metre long board ruler. But he was good at teaching us french.£71.93/ £180.007
