i think this might be one of those "miserable from any angle" situations, although, the local councils might be reluctant to make someone homeless so might be worth chatting to them, and also to the housing department.

Social housing is in high demand, but if someone is about to be made homeless there might be a glimmer there.(I have met two people who have been socially housed in the last year in London, but there were circumstances that made them priorities, one was homeless and 55 so moved into a social care block, the other was going to move out of area for cost reasons as you mention but now has a lovely little maisonette that a local councillor helped her find as he was on the board of the charity that ran the estate - so - perhaps worth talking to the local councillor if there is one that has an interest in housing..  Long shot but worth a try maybe just to explore all options.

Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!
  • Unfortunately things are different in Ni re care homes but I thought in GB there was a lifetime contribution cap.  Is it worth investigating that and your cousin taking out a mortgage of that value to buy a share of the house?

They kept talking about it but never did it & if you read it very carefully they were only talking about the nursing needs element.
  • Thank you all, much appreciated. I will read, process, and pass the info on.
I think the lifetime contribution cap is meant to come in this October and be 85k but we'll see, it was delayed a couple of years ago

  • Well after a day stressing about build and an evening stressing about aunt and cousin I then saw a mouse just before I was getting ready for bed.
Cue late night dash to mums to sleep there.
We have spent the morning trying to find access points we've missed and cleaning up mouse poo.
I am going into adrenalin shock at every tiny sound or movement.
I have also tried to register the new addresses and the council put the wrong postcode.
So I corrected them and they did it again but changed it to the wrong road too.
It's not even the road that corresponds to the wrong postcode.
I have to clean the flat and myself before family friends arrive. And do all the other million things that need doing. Unfortunately I am now just a giant panic attack and am going to sit in bed with the duvet over my head and cry instead.

Oh what a blooming nightmare everything is! And as if all that wasn't enough - the mouse!

I hope you at least enjoy spending time with your guests.

    Sending hugs and positive vibes.
