Haha loving all your guesses @WelshmansDaughter @Blackcats @beanielou and disgracefully I don't think I've read any of them, would you recommend? I think I still own a copy of Black Beauty from childhood but never liked the sound of it!
@redofromstart and @WinterWarrior it's The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster and I didn't own it, I read it from the library, and over the years I've occasionally thought of it with a disconcerting feeling that all is very much not well... I bloody love how good-dark kids books are when done properly. Haven't read it for over 30 years and I saw the map on the first page and immediately went 'noooo, not The Doldrums!' 😂 👀

Haven’t actually read it, I was a Nancy drew girl1

I loved the Point horror series.
I was such a goth child 😂0 -
Read those too but didn’t remember them until you said it1

I’ve not read the phantom toll booth, do let us know if it’s as good as you remember. My library remembered book was called Octagon Magic by Andre Norton. A good work friend found me a copy many years later just going on my vague description ✨Not all who wander are lost - J.R.R.Tolkien

phantom toll booth and 35th may are similar themes. I read them both as school library books and regret not owning them.Ballet Shoes is a great book beanielou and I'm sure I still have my copy despite the best efforts of the moths. My mortgage free diary: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6498069/whoops-here-comes-the-cheese

I vaguely remember The Phantom Tollbooth so suspect I read it years ago. As a child I was obsessed with mythology and anything to do with other cultures but also loved Ballet Shoes, Nancy Drew, Chalet School and anything remotely horsey. Still have all my Thelwell books 🙂I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)1
