Not been the warmest of Aprils

  • Why astonishing? It hasn't been that warm, but yes if I was just myself or myself and partner we probably would have hardly had the heating on, but we have a newborn baby and there is more to life than money saving (I know, saying this on a money saving website!). I've used around 1200kWh, so if I've had to spend around £120 to keep my baby warm then so be it.

Double layer of babygro and an extra blanket? Somehow babies survived even before central heating existed.

Doesn't mean they lived longer though. They did survive!

Every heat thread endsthe same way, well they used to survive without central heating, I remember ice on the inside of windows and someone will mention the freezing outside toilet and third hand bath water🤣🤣

However in modern times with all the money splashed this winter there was no need to go to extremes imo.

I'm not talking extremes, I'm talking a couple of C lower on the thermostat and an extra blanket on a baby that might have saved £100. This is a money saving forum.

  • Yeah, no, don't be daft. How far back should I take my lifestyle to save a few pounds? I'm not putting my baby in 2 baby grows to save some money 🙄 (I do appreciate that I am in a position to afford that)

I don't keep the heating on 24/7 and wrap her up at night, but there's no chance I'll take the chance of my baby being cold (or frankly go to insanely extreme lengths) in some sort of fanatical pursuit of keeping my energy bill low, when there is a very easy solution to that, which is of course have the heating on a bit more.

I was responding to another poster to saying that some of the higher one's aren't quite astonishing when you take some people's living situations into account.

  • I doubt it could have saved £100 given my need for hot water (washing baby bottles etc).

In regards to before central heating, there would've been another source of heat (such as a fire), which I don't have, and the cost of getting the correct wood would probably be more than the central heating. Also I don't think it's particularly healthy to sit round a fire with potential dust, soot and particulates (I do appreciate it is possible to do this safely, but my own personal thoughts are that I don't want to take thst chance and sit round a potential health hazard of an evening).

I genuinely do appreciate money saving tips, and before my baby I would sit with an extra jumper and blanket (and still do, as only put heating on when it's a bit cold for a baby, eg 15degC). I just think a bit of perspective can sometimes be needed on here. Before I had a baby I was a below average user, doing all the usual tips to save energy, and sitting being slightly cold to save putting the heating on. Now I'll be an above average user, probably not massively but will be clearly above average. That's fine. I have another person here with particular needs and I can deal with that and knew about that when having a baby.

Would I rather have an extra £100 not spent on energy over the past month? Of course, I'm not loaded. But I can, thankfully, afford it, and it's well worth it. Some things are worth spending a bit of money on.

They largely survived, but the move from coal fires to central heating made a big contribution to improved health and longer lives. I spent much of my childhood with bronchitis, colds and breathing difficulties, that all disappeared once we moved to a modern house with a gas boiler.

Yep , as @Mstty said they did survive …. hmmm when you have someone in the household with terminal cancer what has that to got to with money saving , every day cannot have a price , do not start me off on money saving , I/We have been sensible about wasting money, as they once said "That bullet had his name on it" sadly it's the one that says "To whom it may concern" is the one that blows all arguments out of the water. I still try to save money but I can't save enough to buy another day. 😡

  • We have sleeping bags but you can use blankets as long as they are securely tucked in at both sides, at the bottom and that the babies feet are touching the bottom of the crib.
