How are you getting on with April energy usage?

Looking at the weather forecasts til the end of the month I reckon we will use 20% more this April than last April.

Last April 1 st I completely switched my central heating off and never put it on again until Oct.
This April I m using not far off the amount I was in February.
This could be something to do with being on Octopus Tracker getting gas at below 5 p a kWh for most of the month  .
I m definitely more inclined to be using gas more freely at these more reasonable prices whereas at double the price it would be more likely to be back to thick jumpers .
Maybe Octopus do make more profit on lower daily prices than people think if they are selling more kWh at cheaper rates .Pile em high and sell em cheap .

That's been my attitude since moving to Octopus in Feb but I haven't had to put the heating on all week until last night. Next 2 weeks isn't looking great either going by BBC weather

The best way to compare temperature differences between months or even days and heating loads etc is to use "degree days" https://www.degreedays.net/calculation. You can download the data from your local weather station going back by quite a long time.

Obviously April 2023 isn't complete yet but for heating geeks there's a wealth of info that can be gleaned  ;) you could then plot your heating consumption against degree days to see how well your system tracks. a bit like this - data from 1/1/2021 to 3/4/23

the three charts are heating degree days from my local weather station (RAF Marham), and how my leccy consumption tracks them. However, because its all my electricty consumption rather than just the heating system (I dont have a meter to only record heating consumption) there's quite a high base load and high anomalous peaks (use of oven, washing machine dryer etc) but you get the idea.

  • For us April is going to be more expensive due to the Easter holidays being really wet. My boys spent far too much time gaming!

We also woke up to an unexpected frost today

April is heading towards my second worst generation (daylight) since 2016. A bad couple of months.

It has felt a cool month, but:-

    1 Apr 22 - 7 May 22 = 695 kWh gas

    1 Apr 23 - 20 Apr 23 = 375 kWh gas

so unless we have a really cold couple of weeks, looks like it'll be about 30% less than same period last year :)

Our electricity looks like it's going to be around 50% of previous April's, compared to the mean for April 2019, 20, and 22.

I have lived here since June so no hard data to compare.

I turned off my heating timer last weekend, but I'm still having to put it on manually twice a day.
Currently considering using heating in the morning only, and using electric heater in bedroom a little while before I go to bed. I watch tv for a few hours in bed and hate going into a cold room, and it is already the coldest room.
The smart meter will show if that's a good thing or not, should I decide to try.

It's been cool in the mornings and the heating has come on for an hour or so most days but hasn't come on later in the day or evenings.

Graph shows average KWh per day. I'm all electric on E7 with storage heaters. I'm still doing marginally better than last April so no complaints here.
