Sophisticated might be over-egging it a bit. Yes, I open the door but I've made a blanking plate that seals the opening and I cut an opening that the exhaust duct fits into. Room got cooler and stove flue got hotter. Result!

I did a quick half-hour test, as the sun wasn't shining and it was past 4pm, and it got the room temperature down exactly 1 degree and the RH down by 2% in that time.

Thanks! Definitely something to investigate further - I'd be interested to hear more about how you get on when it actually warms up again… 🤣

Sadly my heatpump isn't being commissioned until Monday, so I'll be running electric rads/towel rails tomorrow. It'll be nice not to be cold though…

@Netexporter when you're ready for the next level of modification, you can add a second hose like this:

A level of sophistication beyond my pay grade (and I'm clean out of alooominum tape). I reckon the thermo-syphon effect of the chimney probably confers a significant efficiency advantage. It's certainly a lot neater than two elephants' trunks out of the window, and being up on the hearth it isn't in the way of anything, when the stove isn't in use. Very handily there is a redundant gas pipe next to the fireplace, which I'm going to use to drain the condensate directly outside.

enjoying today’s nice run of negatives already today

    • washing machine is already on its third load of the day, this one will tumble dry for an hour too, then there will be one final load of towels to go through which will also tumble dry
    • Should have time to run a tub clean after that.
    • dehumidifier turned on via a Tapo at 5am
    • Bread machine is running ready to make rolls
    • Lots of cooking planned for later via both the oven and the hob
    • Garden office underfloor heating is on because nobody will be using the office today so why not!
    • Dishwasher will probably run later too - it won’t be full but may as well go anyway.

Neighbours leaf on slow charge for free on the 3 pin plug since 5am we always give them the heads up on days like these. (For reference they are economy 7 with storage heaters, no smart meter if anyone wonders why they aren't in agile or some EV tariff)

Should be a quid savings just on that

Battery charged, hot water heated (nice long soak in the bath last night!), electric heating and airer on, and one load of laundry done. However, we have intermittent sunshine so there isn't as much being pulled from the grid as there would be in winter. DW has packed up, so that's not being used, and I failed to strip the bed yesterday to pre-programme the WM, so the TD won't be on for another couple of hours.

@TroubledTarts if your neighbours got a smart meter they might find that they are better-off on an EV tariff than on Economy 7, particularly if only the heater circuit is charged at Economy 7 rates.

    Really, hadn't thought of that lmao 🤣 🤣 🤣

In all seriousness, as we know here, some people just won't be convinced of getting a smart meter. No matter the benefits

Noting that this isn't really an Economy 7 or EV tariff thread, I feel I should mention that:

    > particularly if only the heater circuit is charged at Economy 7 rates.

That wouldn't be Economy 7. On an E7 tariff the entire house benefits from the cheap rate period; it's not restricted to the heating circuits.
