Good info there, my setup is similar, as I have solar and no batteries, shame the ASHP doesnt have agile integration, could then just tell it to do it once a day whenever its cheapest then without any external input, this can likely be done via something like Home Assistant so its not too much of an issue but still!

Are you on a 150l tank?

Nominal 170L, but I think the actual capacity is 157L.

Evacuated tube solar array never seems to get mentioned for heating water, even though it does work on cloudy days, and might make more sense than running heat pumps just to heat water... personally, freezing cold water showers are most invigorating, even in the depths of winter, and good for your health; so I don't use hot water at all, a lovely way to give the finger to the energy companies as well.

They're normally compared with Solar Panels which are more versatile - you can use electricity to heat water, cook.. and even sell the excess of your energy.

Solar Thermal can only be used to heat water (pushing you can connect certain washing machined and dishwashers) but their installation cost vs return is very poor. I've calculated that my solar thermal saves me 6kWh on a summer day, accepting slightly cooler showers ocassionally it can be solely used April-September (SE England).

So about 30p per person in your household per day, I think it saves me about £350 a year. With entire system costing about £5k it's a very, very long journey to pay for itself.. that's why not mentioned here much :-)

Regarding health of cold showers, I think it's very debatable, including Legionella and that we all catch most of our colds during winter (when it's cold)..

My adopted SMETS 1 meter seems to have given up communicating.  Nothing in Octopus or N3rgy for the past 4 days. More weirdly it also isn't communicating with the IHD or home mini anymore.

Emailed Octopus yesterday but nothing back so far. Hoping they can sort or replace meters before Winter sets in...

I've not had a chance to look..it's in the garage and the garage is full of junk waiting to goto the tip. Will have to sort that task tomorrow

  • Perhaps the junk is blocking the signal?

Managed to have a look. WAN was flashing 5 times which from what I can see means it has a good signal strength so no idea. Will wait for Octopus to reply to my email, or phone them on Monday if they don't.

Can only guess it may have been an update or something gone wrong to have caused the IHD and home mini to lose connection.

Comms hub auto restarts every few days so it might just start working again, mine did
