My 7 year old has twigged this year that santa might not be real. I've tried to carry it on but I think he is just humouring me now.
So's my 7yo with some hilarious moments, such as peering up the chimney (still open fireplace in our bedroom) on the pretext of offering to hoover our room, so he could see if he really could get down and if it's true pieces of coal will be up there for him to hand to naughty children.:rotfl: (I wasn't so impressed to be told there's a dead bird up there though:rolleyes: ) and trying to catch me out by casually suggesting that I didn't need to bother with Santa just buy the pressies, wrap them and put them under tree whilst he's asleep. :D , so I most certainly still have funny 'magical moments' to remember from childhood from the year he started wavering. No-one ever told me he wasn't real I worked it out myself and that's what I'd prefer my own kids to do but I personally would not want my kids to go to secondary school still believing, as I think it's a big potential for teasing, so if they haven't sussed by then I will tell them.

I should imagine the teacher assummed that most kids had worked it out/been told by secondary school age. I wouldn't fetch it up with the teacher.

Its a sad day when your child starts humouring you about santa rather than the other way round isn't it. :rotfl:

There's your problem; little kids believing in Santa isn't the problem, but you created the fear for him and now it's come home to roost. It's not the teacher's fault at all. While it's painful that kids grow up, grow up they must.

Sola, you hit the nail on the head.

Anyway on Christmas morning this will all be forgotton when he realises that even without santy, there will still be presents.

Sorry I was not sure how to put SOLA's words into quote.

    Happy Christmas:beer:
  • I find it somewhat ironic that the very thread title is telling all the children (and Jammygal and Quackers) who read MSE exactly what the OP is annoyed that her son's teacher told him :)

Daughters noticed most of the presents were wrapped in the same paper..and ..
    Soooo
Father Christmas sent UNWRAPPED presents, as no time to wrap on Christmas eve.
However we always gave them a wrapped present from Mummy and Daddy as well as the main (unwrapped) presents from Father Christmas.
Not quite sure when they realized, but at 23 and 21 they still like to have a pillow case with unwrapped presents at the end of their bed, from Father Christmas!

I work with 11 year olds at a school and there are a few that either still believe or are not convinced either way  Some of them, as another poster said, have learning difficulties but not all. I think it is inevitable at this age that someone will tell them the truth and while I can understand the op feeling disappointed that this has happened I think it had to happen sooner or later. I hope once you feel calmer you will see that it will not spoil your christmas in any way. Merry Christmas everyone :D

    You only have one childhood.

It's a time when we can love unconditionally, we can laugh without fear, where we're free, where we can believe in pixies and Rumplestiltskin.

Any adult that wants to take that away from a child is beyond any words. We're only children once.

And im sure many / most of us agree with this ....... when they are SMALL children

but age 11 / 12 ........... secondary school and growing up ! is a bit much to be believing in santa !! ( or make that the parents wanting & expecting them to be ..........) IMO of course
  • Oh you rotten lot - It can't be true - Santa not real !!
Then who is the man I have been kissing early every christmas morning in a red suit? Who is this strange portly person with the big belly and beard? More to the point - where does he go every year and how did he find me when I moved home?
I am soooo... upset to find this out I'll just have to stay in bed for the rest of the year !!
( Does this mean I won't get any pressies this year now I know, or will he forgive me and get me that new pair of boots, mobile phone and necklace and earrings set I've set my heart on? )

I used to work with 11 year olds (and younger) in primary school, and agree with this. In my son's year 6 class, there was one boy who believed who was teased by the others.

Interestingly, I have a friend who is horrified with her son's school for telling her 6 year old son that santa IS real - as she has taught her children that there is no such thing as Santa. Teachers can't win - there is definitely an argument for being very careful what you assume is a 'given' - personal beliefs are just that.

tell them from an early age its a story.
but make it clear thats all it is. Btw at my school if i was 11 or 12 and belived in santa i expect i would of been bullied everyday until i left school :(
its a nice childish thing but its only really for very small kids. I would expect a 11/12 year old to have a good think about it and figure out its just a story..
The orginal post in this thread has a very very slim chance of being about money saving. The post is more than likely to ask a question that google could answer better than any of us.
