Help, what to do? Son's teacher just told him Santa's Not Real

Regardless of the rights and wrongs of whether an 11yr old should be believing or not......I dont personally feel this is an area where a teacher should become involved at all.
Personal beliefs are just that......personal.
No clear cut right or wrong....just personal and not for others to deliberately influence or ridicule simply because of their own beliefs..
Having said that, the teacher would not have acted with malice so you cant make too big a deal of it, I dont think. If it were me, I might tactfully mention that it might be a good idea to be careful in future as clearly there are still some children of that age who do still believe.
Again, if it were me, what's done is done and I would take this opportunity to help him move on to the next stage of his growing up and tell him the truth.0 -

There's your problem; little kids believing in Santa isn't the problem, but you created the fear for him and now it's come home to roost. It's not the teacher's fault at all. While it's painful that kids grow up, grow up they must.
My 8 year old niece knows something's up. The other day she said 'Nanny, Father Christmas can't be in that shop, that shop and that shop all at the the same time. So I reckon they're not real Father Christmasses, because the real one only comes on Christmas Eve.' Nanny just smiled; she'll leave her to work it out for herself and she's already on the way.0 -
We've never bothered with Santa as I don't agree with the culture that goes with him. My children haven't suffered at all, and they've still had some fantastic Christmas Day's over the years.
OP - I think it's best to tell him the truth now, but stress that the presents all come from you, and you work hard to buy them for him because you love him so much. Here I go again on my own....0 -
What do you mean ' Santas not real '???????0

Personally I feel that by the time a child goes to secondary school they most certainly should not think that Santa is real. For a start it would single them out out for ridicule and bullying by their peers.
I now have 2 grandsons aged 3 & 4 and although their Mum and Dad and granparents encourage them in thinking santa exists now we most certainly wont be encouraging it up to secondary school age.
Santa can be a frightening idea to small children. We are encouraging them to believe that a stranger can enter their house when they are asleep and leave without then knowing and also condoning that it is ok to talk to a strange old man when all the rest of the year we are warning them not toSealed Pot Callenge No 0740 -
I find it somewhat ironic that the very thread title is telling all the children (and Jammygal and Quackers) who read MSE exactly what the OP is annoyed that her son's teacher told him0

i have twin 12 year old sons, for a couple of years now they've said stuff like i know its parents that put stuff there, and added isn't it?
they still write letters to santa and leave mince pies etc.
one of them lost a tooth the other day and was upset that the tooth fairy hadnt come.
And today one of them was writing to the birthday bear, asking for games for his birthday.
have to add tho, that my kids are not the usual street wise 12 year old, they both have learning disabilities and go to special schools. i guess its up to the individual families at the end of the day, and not up to the teachersenjoy life, we only get one chance at it:)0 -
Hi,
People with very strong personal beliefs 'generally' let the school know so that staff are aware of them - did you do this?
Might be something to bear in mind for other families?

My 7 year old has twigged this year that santa might not be real. I've tried to carry it on but I think he is just humouring me now.Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0
