Adidas threatening letter

Hi, my son has received this letter in the post yesterday morning from a law firm claiming to represent adidas. We have tried contacting the firm but as expected they are closed.
The long and short of it is he received a delivery after the chosen delivery date prior to travelling and I returned them for him and that was that.
I am now unable to sleep as he is finger pointing at me for doing something incorrect.
I have no idea what and if I have done anything wrong.
does this look legitimate and is it normal practice?

I am unable to sleep as he is refusing to speak to me and saying I have ruined his life. I only returned a parcel and did it via my post office.

What proof do you have of the return, and what method did you use (signed for? Proof of posting?) Which retailer? Value of the goods?
Refunds are not normally issued until after an item has been received back and checked - so I'm very surprised that one was sent before that.
Retailers also don't normally go straight to law firms about this stuff, so there is something that doesn't add up here...5 -

However I have a 'return' sitting on my Adidas account.
There was an issue with where the courier left the item. I was on live chat about to get a refund and a neighbour appeared with the order.
Confirmed to live chat I had my items, no worries chat ended.
I then got a refund email (gift card used)
I have had subsequent emails about my return being delayed but I will get a refund soon.
I have tried to contact Adidas a few times but CS cant seem to get to the bottom of it as Ive been clear I have the item.
So potentially issues on their returns processes

Is that £1100 the value of the goods returned, or does it include legal charges as well?
Legal letter won't have been the first step for Adidas, so what are the timescales? What happened in the total period from first purchase to now?0 -
Guys this is the first piece of correspondence received. Thank you for the replies0

Did you log into his account, open a return and ADIDAS sent a returns postage label?
Or did YOU pay for the return out of your own money?
If the former, then check the tracking number. If it shows they arrived, then contact ADIDAS and state that they have the goods as per their own tracking number. If they are showing as lost, then it's up to ADIDAS to chase the courier as they issued the return label.
If the latter, then YOU need to chase the parcel. Check the tracking number. If it says delivered, give this information to Adidas. If it is lost, then you will need to claim from the courier and repay adidas. Hopefully if you sent it back, you insured it for the correct amount???
When was the original order placed? I'm thinking perhaps it was quite a while ago given it has got as far as a court letter?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)2 -
It was returned via pre paid label which was issued online by adidas. I was asked to take it to the post office which I did. This was towards the end of last year before he went travelling and he received an email to say it was on its way back to adidas. Is this deemed a court letter? Now I really am worried!0

So, what happened between end of last year and now?
Adidas won't have been silent and then sent legal letter.
Is the £1200 just the value of the goods?1 -
Sounds like there's more to the story here.0

What does his account show. Any record of returned item?

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the process to date, you should leave your son to sort it out himself. The letter was addressed to him and it's his problem to sort. You did him a favour and it now sounds as if he's bullying you. He can't go off travelling, expect other people to conduct affairs for him and then bully them when it doesn'tgo to plan. Leave him to it, it sounds like he needs to grow up.11
