"Do the kitchen staff not deserve s tip for preparing and cooking you a delicious meal?"
isn't that their job and what you pay the menu price for? or am missing something?0 -

km1500 said:strictly speaking service charge is a charge for taking the order, bringing the food to the table, asking if everything is okay and then clearing up after you
a tip is over and above the price of the food and the service charge
I personally think the service charge should be included in the price of the meal and a 'tip' should remain for exceptional service or if you just want to give something
by the way (and apologies if it has already been mentioned) if you eat in a pub then go to the bar first and order your first drink(s) and pay for them and then say that you have booked a table
that's where you avoid paying service charge on the first drinks otherwise they would just put them on a tab add them up at the end and charge whatever service charge percentage
Should I also pay towards the heating/lighting?
Perhaps I should start taking my own toilet roll.
If I was presented with a bill that included service charge for part of a waiter's job, I'd ask for it to be removed.sheramber said:Do the kitchen staff not deserve s tip for preparing and cooking you a delicious meal?
By only tipping the waitress the kitchen staff get nothing.
Any service charge on the bill can be split amongst all the staff, but it should always be optional.
My husband was on business trip to USA and had a meal out with an American colleague from the firm he was visiting.
After their meal, the colleague paid by credit card and the left.
A waiter came chasing after them and handing him the credit card slip ( no PIN in them days) pointed out he had not left the enough of a tip.
The colleague took the slip, scored out the tip amount , handed it back to the waiter tand walked off.
Maybe they are shared out.
I never include a tip in my credit card payment.
If I do tip, it's in cash.1 -
I worked as a commis silver service waitress during my gap year. Wages were terrible because management expected us to get tips. The restaurant manager expected us to hand our tips over to him, to be shared between him and the Head Chef then kitchen staff then wait staff, using a 'tronc' system. I refused to hand over my tips and there was nothing he could do as management didn't know about his tronc.
If we eat out I leave 10% as I'm not convinced that wait staff see any of the service charge.
The chefs are paid more and often get free meals and free beer.1
