I usually add 10% when paying; however I do ask whether it goes to the staff or to the restaurant.

We were on holiday in York the 1st time we came across a service charge on our restaurant bill. We didnt notice it till later didnt even know what it was for. We tipped in cash the waitress said thanks very much...she didnt say no we've already added our tips to your bill !

Mr Pink :"I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds."
  • If a service charge was automatically added then I'd ask them what it's for and then remove it if I didn't agree. However, I totally understand why that's awkward or uncomfortable for people to do.

I'm not sure I agree with not tipping due to minimum wage, but then I'm not sure I agree with tipping certain sectors and not others.

If I've had great service, then I'd Tip 15%  if I've had rubbish service I wouldn't Tip at all.

strictly speaking service charge is a charge for taking the order, bringing the food to the table, asking if everything is okay and then clearing up after you

a tip is over and above the price of the food and the service charge

I personally think the service charge should be included in the price of the meal and a 'tip' should remain for exceptional service or if you just want to give something

by the way (and apologies if it has already been mentioned) if you eat in a pub then go to the bar first and order your first drink(s) and pay for them and then say that you have booked a table

that's where you avoid paying service charge on the first drinks otherwise they would just put them on a tab add them up at the end and charge whatever service charge percentage

Do the kitchen staff not deserve s tip for preparing and cooking you a delicious meal?

By only tipping the waitress the kitchen staff get nothing.

Any service charge on the bill can be split amongst all the staff, but it should always be optional.

My husband was on business trip to USA and had a meal out with an American colleague from the firm he was visiting.

After their meal, the colleague paid by credit card and the left.

A waiter came chasing after them and handing him the credit card slip ( no PIN in them days) pointed out he had not left the enough of a tip.

The colleague took the slip, scored out the tip amount , handed it back to the waiter tand  walked off.
