  • I've never tipped postie before, but because I home educate my kids we usually see him every day. He's cheery, goes out of his way to pop packages to us quick if he sees us going out and has dealt with alot of parcels (mostly amazon and Ebay) this year. Don't somehow feel comfortable giving money, but looking for other suggestions. He parks his car opposite our house, so could give him something to pop in the car before starting his round.

We always buy our postman a bottle of wine and some chocolates. Wouldn't have thought of giving money:confused: . He's a sweetie though so perhaps money in an envelope would be better  . Mmmmm thinking time!

Dustmen - we have two different lots. Rubbish and recycling so give £10 to each group with a Christmas card.

Paperboy - cancelled him in the Summer but I always gave him £5 at Easter, £5 at start of summer holidays and £10 at Christmas. He was a lovely cheerful lad and always came regardless of weather. Might sound a lot but we paid via direct debit for papers so didn't give him weekly tip.

I am sure these people are very nice people but it is their job - they are getting paid large salaries already!

well my hubbie is a postie and i hate to disillusion you but they DO NOT get paid large salaries!!
I tip my postie and I think they deserve it for tramping the streets rain hail or shine. Also I dont think as someone said they get paid for it, its their job, well once in a while its nice to show your appreciation for the job that they do

Large Salaries??? They dont get anything like the national average. Their managers probably do but your average milkman or postie? Doubt it!! Yeah its their job but do you not tip a waiter/waitress. Its christmas!!!
  • I am all for tipping my Postie, and would do the same for a milkman if I had one. The binmen, well we have 3 lots so I dont. But our Postie is an absolute gem, always has a chat if he has time and he has 5 kids so I think that little extra is bound to come in handy. I give him £10.
  • I give my postie £20 because he's a gem. Bin men get nothing because they leave the bins all over the pavement!

My 15 year old son delivers papers six mornings each week, leaving the house at 6.25am no matter the weather as he has to be back by 7.30 to get ready for school. He really appreciates getting Christmas tips and always writes a thank you letter for each one that he receives.
  • just out of interest - would anyone tip a fireman for doing his job???

    I don't think so.

Are you in the real world!!! These people work in all weather. When you are tucked up in your feather duvet, they are up and working to keep our environment clean and our post on time and efficient and your cornflake milk fresh.
I think my milkman is brilliant. He is reliable, friendly, he looks after the elderly people he supplies, (he does shopping for some when he has finished his round - he even buys them supermarket produce when he supplies the same items. The bin man, the postie, the milkman - they are all part of our island culture.
We need to encourage and support these people.

Don't they get paid salaries for this?

Joking aside - this year I'll be giving the following:
    Milkman: Home made ginger biscuits
Postie: Some nice choccies and home made ginger biscuits
    Binmen: Home made ginger biscuits

I'm not leaving money because I don't give ANYONE money at christmas - My postie is a trooper so he deserves something extra!

I think it's a very personal thing if you want to give people something or not really :)
