My son is also a paper boy and at Christmas he makes a lot of money with tips, but hey, he is out and about before sunrise every Mon-Fri and does 3 rounds for all of £32 per week (in all)!

I tip the milkman £5 and did not think of the binmen, suppose I ought to do so, but my postman is CR*P, once he broke a milk bottle on my doorstep and SCUTTLED away! My neighbour saw him and told me, I chased him and challenged him and all he could say was 'I did not do it on purpose'. I replied 'I should bloody well hope so!'. He always makes mistakes, leaves me other people's post, God knows how much post of mine he has lost that I shall never know of! No tip for him!

I want to tip our veg. delivery driver because he is very very nice and I know he has a family with small children but I am worried about offending him, he is a sort of very 'intellectual' person (we have long philosophical discussions on my doorstep) and I am not sure he is the 'tipping type', perhaps I should give him a box of chocolates instead? What do people think?

Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

On a practical level, how do you all go about tipping the milkman, etc, if you never see them? Is it safe to leave it in a milkbottle?

It's my first year of havig milk delivered: I order online and pay by DD and so never see him. :o

I would like to give something to our postie as he's wonderful - perhaps a bottle of wine? I don't really have spare cash for giving a money tip, but do you think that is the best thing to give?

    Sea xx

It's a lovely idea but considering what he might have to carry/if he gets any other presents/if his bag falls down and it breaks - it might soak everything or leave glass in there, or be a bit heavy to fall :)

If you don't wish to tip money, what about a box of chocolates? Instores have a box of all gold for £1.99 :)

We've put a Christmas card with a fiver on it on the side for the postie. Wanted to give it to him today but we missed him as we were in the kitchen when he came.
  • My ex was a binman and the christmas tips would really help us, the pay was awful and the extra money was much needed.

We are leaving a tip for the postie this year, we moved house last christmas but he redirects all our post for us, is only the odd bit of junk that still filters through to our old house now, i dont know how much it would have cost to pay for redirection though. My dh often catches him for a chat, and wanted to give him a tip even before we saw this thread.:o

Will be giving the binnies a tip this year for the first time ever, am going to buy a cheap tin of chocs and give them £5 but dh is protesting that its not enough to split between 3. Arrgghh!

Also, dd has a taxi escort to school and gave the escorts a box of chocs last week, cant begin to describe how great they are, they are married and always have a laugh and joke with us.

To the poster who suggested thank you cards for supermarket packers, thanks, im not having anymore deliveries this year but will remember that for next year.

Well it is only a Christmas tip, if you start working it out weekly it sounds like a "wage".

Both of my boys were paper boys years ago and I know how hard they work.

    I tip
    Weekday paper boy £5
    Sunday paper boy £2
    Bin men £5
    Post lady £3

might not sound much, but if they get something from all the people they go to, they will make quite a bit and it's only a gesture of thanks.

I would be wary of leaving money in a milk bottle, there might be naughty people out there who get wind that tips are being left out. I would try to think of another way to get it to him.
  • Id say don't give them gifts, but money. £5 is reasonable. Simply for the fact that if everyone where to give him a gift, he has to carry all those around with him all day and 40 bottles of wine can become heavy when your delivering a bag full of parcels lol :)

So a Christmas card with £5 in so he can buy himself a pint is fair IMO.
    Rules, Rules, Rules .....
  • I don't think so.

Are you in the real world!!! These people work in all weather. When you are tucked up in your feather duvet, they are up and working to keep our environment clean and our post on time and efficient and your cornflake milk fresh.
I think my milkman is brilliant. He is reliable, friendly, he looks after the elderly people he supplies, (he does shopping for some when he has finished his round - he even buys them supermarket produce when he supplies the same items. The bin man, the postie, the milkman - they are all part of our island culture.
We need to encourage and support these people.

So if we tip people for being out in bad weather, that's road sweepers, police officers, park keepers, lollipop ladies/gents, traffic wardens, etc etc.

The only one I really agree with, unless they've done something over and above their job, is paper boys/girls because they really are low paid. The rest get paid a fair wage for doing their job and shouldn't expect tips for just doing their job. I tip when someone has given an excellent service.
