Tips on tips:- How much to give the postie and the milkman

We received Christmas cards from our postman and milkman this week and are now wondering what we should do in response.
We never see our milkman as he delivers before we get up, but our postman is very nice and is always cheery when delivering (eBay!) parcels that won't go through the letterbox.
This is the first time it has happened for us, so was wondering if there are any "unwritten rules" regarding tipping them.

Same here for our postie
He's a lovely lovely man (the regular one, the fill-in ones not so much) and always shares the time of day with us. We thought about getting him a present but obviously he'd have to carry it in his bag so it's not really a great idea so a card and tipping seems best - though we're not sure how much.0 -
Dunno but Mum used to shower the bin men with money and wine - cos a) they were lovely b) they'd take anything...(rubbsih i mean!!) so no trips to the skip!!
Give the paper lad £5 usually! Don't have a milkman and the postman does our head in cos he tramples the lawn (talk about us being fuddy duddy's!!)

I don't know what to do for my postman. He is lovely, and I've done all my christmas shopping online this year so that's a lot for him to carry :-/Murphy's No More Pies Club #209

TBH I feel uncomfortable tipping people.......dont tip taxi drivers or my hairdresser.........sorta feels like Penelope Keith... saying there you go my good man!!!!!
Dont get milk or newspapers delivered now but I used to give the young lads a few pounds when we did.
Kinda feel that if your postie has given you a card .....he;s asking for a tip, and I definitely wouldnt give anythingcheerio hen0 -
We're in the sticks, so our postie takes our stuff for us too. It's a long trek to the nearest postbox. We usually give him a small carton of Roses/Quality Street, something similar or a bottle of plonk [something to share with his family] + Xmas Card with £10.00 cash.

I always tip the binmen and the postie, it's good to have them on your side. I give the binmen £10 since there are a few of them and £5 to our postie. The binmen always take all my rubbish, always say "hi", (I even got a "happy new Year" kiss one year, unfortunately he was a bit old and not good looking!) postie always good with parcels etc and also says "hi". I feel its important to thank these people, but its up to yourself.0 -
