This is a good thread as id not thought to tip my postie before but he will be getting a nice box of choccies from me now! My postie is lovely he always signs things instead of taking them away and is always cheery.
Thanks for the idea:beer:Love a charity shop bargain0 -
I only tip my lovely milkman....i give him £5 in a card (i forgot all about this, this year so i'm glad of this thread)0

i think this is a good thread also, i always tip my paper girl, she is excellent, and the postman as he opens my porch door and places my letters and parcels on the mat neatly. the bin men are %%%% as they are always leaving bags and the recycling bin men have not taken my recycling box AGAIN.0

I think tips are for when somebody goes the extra mile or does something over and above the basic job. There are lots of people that have to work in bad weather etc so I wouldn't just tip them for that.0

I always tip our postman £5 - he's lovely, always passes the time of day etc, puts parcels etc in a safe place if there is no one in - saves a trip to the Post Office Collections place. They do a tough job for not a lot of money. Used to tip the milkman when he delivered every weekday - stopped and stopped him when he started delivering 3 times a week - we wanted the milk daily to make sure there was some in the morinings as the kids were like gannets and you could never be sure if there would be enough for a cup of tea when you got up.
Bin men - no - used to when they would get the bins if we forgot to put them out - now we just clear up the mess they leave.0 -
just wanted to thank everyone who tips their postman / woman! My Dads a postman and I can't tell you how much of a godsend the little bit extra is at this time of year especially whe nwe were growing up. I now tip my postman and give him a tenner because he is so lovelyMerry Christmas MSE!0

If i like someone, or have been given a good service - i tip them. It's nice to be nice.

Here we are on a money saving forum, trying to scrimp and save to make/buy the cheapest possible presents for our friends and family, yet at the same time, here we are, ready to give away lots of fivers/tenners and cool presents to random people in our lives such as postmen.
I don't agree with tipping full stop. Maybe when I have enough money of my own I'd feel more confortable giving it away just like that, but until I can afford it, no one gets any tips.
People are paid wages for a reason, and to me it doesn't matter how many times people put across the "they don't get paid very much" argument. I don't care how much they get paid; it's probably more than what I get anyway. Tipping, as mentioned above, should only be for exceptional service, people who are genuinely nice and want to do their job properly, not for those who are obviously only doing it to get a tip.
I'd give him a christmas card in return. It's the thought that counts, and I'm more or less certain that his only thought was getting a tip off you.0 -
I am sure these people are very nice people but it is their job - they are getting paid large salaries already!
I don't think so.
Are you in the real world!!! These people work in all weather. When you are tucked up in your feather duvet, they are up and working to keep our environment clean and our post on time and efficient and your cornflake milk fresh.
I think my milkman is brilliant. He is reliable, friendly, he looks after the elderly people he supplies, (he does shopping for some when he has finished his round - he even buys them supermarket produce when he supplies the same items. The bin man, the postie, the milkman - they are all part of our island culture.
We need to encourage and support these people.0 -
My son is a paper boy.
He is out every morning and 5 evenings, 50 weeks of the year, regardless of the weather conditions and frequently returns soaked through.
He has been menaced by dogs, grumbled at because letter boxes are too small for Sunday papers and has fallen on badly maintained steps etc etc
Yes he gets paid - but nothing like the amount the newsagent screws out of customers as 'delivery charge'. It has changed my thinking when I realised that a £1 tip = 2p a week.
£5 = 10p a week.
It is the elderly folk who are the most generous - I won't say anymore.
He has been brought up to be polite, so says 'thank you' to everyone.
