Pretty sure @Marchitiello was eligible for premier..

I upgraded too - I think it was an automated income check and then the PRM reached out to introduce herself (and interview me!)
Yes, they confirmed eligibility first but I only have Premier Rewards (for the rewards that I exchange to Avios), not Premier Black Rewards (so not sure if Black would call for a general RBS Black Rewards Debit Card rather than the Drummonds/Child & Co card). Between the wife and I we already get more than what  Premier Black Rewards would offer from other providers (Nationwide FlexPlus, Amex Platinum, HSBC Premier and Chase plus other Forex fee free options), however I would be interested in experiencing the concierge service on offer, especially now that the Amex Platinum’s one has  been massively downgraded.
Was just about to ask who said anything about Premier *Black* Rewards and then I saw it. Teaches me a lesson.

Either way, for the OP question I don't think there's any material difference between upgrading to PBR/PR. The Premier element (and check) are the same.
As Black Premier is a special product family  (account and CC) it may come with the RBS card though, as I would be surprised if they allowed for yet another niche version of their card with “Black” editions of Drummonds/Child & Co. Regarding other material differences, The department handling stationery would be the same between premier and non premier customers of C&C and Drummonds sort codes, however Premier do get access to Personal/Premier bankers, which regular customers would do only if banking in branch (as explained many years ago about having direct access to a PB at Child first and Drummonds later, without being Premier).
  • I would add that my first Child account, I was contacted by Child branch offering if there was anything they needed or I could do.

Do you mean "offering if there was anything I needed or they could do"? Guessing I won't get that contact seeing as they are closed

Some of the Personal Bankers that covered Child even back in 2016 worked across both Drummonds and Child branches. I had moved my branch activity to Drummonds branch even before Child closure was announced and got to know the Branch manager and my new PB quite well, as they serviced both my Child and Drummonds account from that point forward (I started working closer to St James), so I am guessing that someone managing Child’s account now over the phone, introducing themselves as if they were from the branch, could very well be based in the Drummonds offices (the branch has a large ground floor space dedicated to staff towards the back end and I believe they retained part of the 1st floor as well (they refurbished the whole building during Covid lock down, and apparently part of the first floor and top floors were to be transformed in luxury apartments to be sold off).

Yes, back in the day Visa and Switch/Mastercard would issue Electron and Solo cards, which followed the same scheme as their 'big brother' Delta/Visa Debit and Switch/Maestro cards but allowed both merchants and cardholders to have confidence when using and accepting cards; Electron/Solo cardholders would know where they could use their card and merchants with older batch EFTPOS or even manual impression processes could correctly identify and refuse such cards.

Eventually the numbers of merchants using the older batch/manual processes dwindled to the point Visa and Mastercard basically forced the issue by deprecating and/or withdrawing the Solo/Electron symbols.

It had nowt to do with debt or poverty - it has to do with the level of trust the issuer has that the cardholder will not use the card inappropriately.

These days it's a bit of a moot point because the opportunities to use a card in a situation a bank would decline authorisation are few-to-none. It's also possible for issuers to change whether a card is enabled for offline transactions or not remotely (it's a setting stored on the chip).

I decided to open a RBS account to take advantage of the £200 switch offer.  Filled in the application form referenced on this thread and duly opened a Select Account.  I received the Child & Co MasterCard and my account was linked to my previous RBS customer number from when I had an account 10 years ago.

I then realised that this it’s probably worth keeping the account as the 6.17% regular saver is a good deal – however I would get a better deal if I upgraded to the Premier Reward account for the reward payments (I’m eligible based on salary.)

I completed the online form to upgrade my account – however rather than upgrade my account it triggered a new application, and I ended up with a new account.  I had to provide passport details again on Digidocs – they were also very thorough over proof of income and after sending 3 months of payslips they also wanted 3 months of bank statements.

Once the account was opened the branding on the RBS app changed to RBS Premier and I was allocated a Premier Manager.

A debit card arrived for the premier account a few days later.  I got a Child & Co branded MasterCard again – however under my name on the front of the card it also says ‘PREMIER REWARD.’  It still has the regular number for telephone banking on the bank, rather than the premier number.

Brilliant - that'll be double the rewards for you! Would you normally meet the premier eligibility requirements?

OP said they were eligible due to Salary - if that’s what you are asking

Aye my bad. Still a couple of pay rises before I get there myself, wondered if there was perhaps a tollerance.

No - they were very thorough - I had to provide payslips, and then bank statements, and then provide details on annual bonus/pension contributions etc.
