I was with First Direct for 10 years before I switched away this summer.

They absolutely do support online banking
I have spent many hours on the phone trying to get the online working, but it never does.  Then they say they will send me a card but it never arrives.  So I just give up.

I have online banking with Barclays for the business accounts and it really is great.  Just not been able to get it for my personal FD accounts.

You need to find out what is wrong with your postal service.

The basic conclusion from this thread is that the OP needs to check what is happening to his mail. Banks do not simply forget to send out debit cards: obviously it has been diverted or dumped by a lazy postie. And of course First Direct supports online banking, which works only once the customer has received the log-on details that are sent in the post. Given that these details have evidently been intercepted somehow, it is a wonder that no fraud has yet taken place.
    So, you need a card
    And a PIN number
    And some log on details

None ever arrive.  On multiple times they have been sent.  Allegedly.  Only ever FD - everything else arrives from everyone else.  Can only conclude it is FD not sending.

If you have a HSBC branch you can get to easily, I am sure FD would post the cards/documents to that branch. But in that case, I am not sure if you would find out what address FD has as your home address.
But you would have the documents to set up online banking.

It appears that VISA is losing It’s popularity contest over MasterCard, are you wanting a VISA in case of an outage with MasterCard payment services?
Sorry this is nothing to do with the OP's issue.I wouldn't say Visa is losing its popularity, but more like banks are being persuaded to ditch Visa for Mastercard.
There is a video on youtube produced by Amex (presumably) called something like: American Express - Why they're successful.
According to this video, based on figures available to Amex, and if my memory serves, in terms of cards issued, Visa has the most (I am guessing worldwide) then Mastercard then Amex.
However in terms of money spent on all the cards, Amex has the most money spent on 'it' based on the spending power of Amex holders. I think Visa were 2nd then Mastercard were 3rd.
Based on banks changing from Visa to Mastercard in the last year or 2, I am guessing Mastercard are having a marketing push to build up the number of their cards in circulation. Presumably this push is to increase their total fee income from all their cards in circulation.

FD have my home as my home address - where I receive statements and cheque books.
  • You can use the Barclaycard paper BGC slip
Only if the Barclaycard bill has a giro slip.
    Mine did not.

I paid using FD telephone banking and will have to do the same next month, after which the card will just decease.
If you have or opt for a paper bill, you will get one attached to any statement generated.
The card will only 'decease' if you actually cancel it; cutting it up won't close it.

I have the paper bill, arrived in an envelope in the post.
    No giro slip provided.

There are multiple ways to pay your credit card, all have more or less been quoted on this thread, saying your debt card always "gets lost in the post" and leaving it at that, would not be an option for me, I'd want to discover why this was happening.

I was actually unaware banks still issued cheque books to personal customers, I've not seen one in more than 10 years, as for online banking, is it a reluctance to engage with modern technology or what is the reason ?

Online banking is so simple, quick and easy to use, you can pay all your bills, no messing with stamps and letters, writing cheques etc, I have a friend with a similar attitude, for years he`d traipse down to the bank to pay bills and do his banking, I was always telling him to open his online banking account, but he kept saying no, then his local bank branch closed, so he had the choice of switching banks or embracing technology, he opted for the latter, and has never looked back, he can`t believe how he managed without it now, give it a try chap.

I only learned this week that I could pay the credit card using the FD phone banking, but I did not like that as much as simply paying by cheque which is just the easiest thing to do (except for Barclaycard who won't accept cheque in the post).
Is writing a cheque, putting it in an envelope, sticking a stamp on it and walking to the post box really easier than just ringing First Direct?

I really recommend raising a complaint with FD so that you get proper help with setting up online banking. Cheques are being phased out across the board - I haven't used one in years and haven't been sent a cheque book for any of my bank accounts for a long time. I used to use one cheque a month for the window cleaner but even they take online payments now.
If FD had told me they sent me a card and it didn't arrive I would be back on the phone asking where it was, not just letting it lie. It gives access to your account - with the PIN that has presumably also got lost in the post.
