If you're with First Direct just ring them up and say you want to pay your Barclaycard. They'll do it for you over the phone and take the money from your current account. All you have to do is to give them your Barclaycard number and the amount you want to pay.

That's what First Direct was invented for: telephone banking.
Thank you for the excellent idea - I did not know that I could do this before.

I have called FD today and paid the first bill so I just hope that goes to the correct place and lands in the Barclaycard account correctly.

It would still be easier to simply pay by cheque through the post with a payment slip, but Barclaycard don't support that process. :(
  • I can highly recommend the BACS online bank transfer through the Banking app ( I bank with NatWest). I send the money to BC CC and within a few hours it’s received by them. Clever stuff.

If you believe you can, you will. If you believe you can't, you won't.

    Secured/Unsecured loans x 1
    Credit Cards x 8 (total limit £55,050)
Creation FS Retail Account x 1
    Creation Credit Sale 0% x 1 = £112.50pm x 20 mths
    0% Overdraft x 1 (£0 / £250)
    Mortgage Outstanding - £137,707.00 (Payment 13/360)
    Total Debt = £7,400 (0%APR) @ £100pm - Stoozing

    No online banking with FD.
They keep saying they'll send details but they never arrive.

Anyway, I paid this first bill and there will be some transactions that go to a second bill.  After that it does not matter as I shredded the card.

Can anyone recommend a good VISA card I can apply for as an alternative?
  • Can you not just change bank, sounds like First Direct are still in the dark ages?! There’s offers to switch your current account too with some banks.

It appears that VISA is losing It’s popularity contest over MasterCard, are you wanting a VISA in case of an outage with MasterCard payment services?

I only have one CC, which is Mastercard, so it makes sense to have a back-up source of funds and I thought being with a different company would mean more security of service.

Will the fact I just opened the Barclaycard stop me getting a card elsewhere?

I don't want AMEX because nowhere accepts them plus they are expensive.

I think the alternative is you embracing current common usage. Requiring physical statements and physical ways of paying may be deemed as 'dinosaur'.  The world moves on.  You can obviously use the internet. I'm confused about your reluctance to make use of it....

Applying for multiple credit cards in a short space of time may be seen as a red flag to lenders. I’d give it 6 months after closure, but even then the question may be asked, why had you taken it out then closed it so soon.

I haven't closed the Barclaycard - I just put it in the shredder.
The reason is simple - because they are too hard to pay.
Would I be better closing the account?

Sorry, my comment about the question was purely rhetorical, it may be something an underwriter would ask in their head when assessing an application, for example.

I really can’t advise on what the best course of action is with the barclaycard but personally for me, if I were to bank in the same manner as yourself I think I’d go absolutely nuts with frustration. Couldn’t think of anything worse than walking in to a bank or posting a cheque.

Perhaps check out on the MSE Credit Club what cards you’re likely to be approved for and then look at the VISA options in more detail, I.e. go to their main websites and look through their finer print on payment methods?

There are multiple ways to pay your credit card, all have more or less been quoted on this thread, saying your debt card always "gets lost in the post" and leaving it at that, would not be an option for me, I'd want to discover why this was happening.

I was actually unaware banks still issued cheque books to personal customers, I've not seen one in more than 10 years, as for online banking, is it a reluctance to engage with modern technology or what is the reason ?

Online banking is so simple, quick and easy to use, you can pay all your bills, no messing with stamps and letters, writing cheques etc, I have a friend with a similar attitude, for years he`d traipse down to the bank to pay bills and do his banking, I was always telling him to open his online banking account, but he kept saying no, then his local bank branch closed, so he had the choice of switching banks or embracing technology, he opted for the latter, and has never looked back, he can`t believe how he managed without it now, give it a try chap.
