Paying Barclaycard

I was actually unaware banks still issued cheque books to personal customers, I've not seen one in more than 10 years, as for online banking, is it a reluctance to engage with modern technology or what is the reason ?
Online banking is so simple, quick and easy to use, you can pay all your bills, no messing with stamps and letters, writing cheques etc, I have a friend with a similar attitude, for years he`d traipse down to the bank to pay bills and do his banking, I was always telling him to open his online banking account, but he kept saying no, then his local bank branch closed, so he had the choice of switching banks or embracing technology, he opted for the latter, and has never looked back, he can`t believe how he managed without it now, give it a try chap.
So definitely comfortable with online banking, but we simply don't have it for our personal accounts.
As for FD, they just can't provide a working online banking service so I use the phone banking for transferring money between our own accounts and the cheque book for paying elsewhere. The big draw of FD was the offset mortgage and the telephone banking - both were quite unique when we started banking with them . FD just seem to have failed to keep up and provide the online service, nor have they ever provided a cash point card in the 16-years since we joined them.
I have suggested to Mrs G-C that we move everything over to Barclays and shown her how simple the online banking is, but she prefers to stick with FD. So, it is cash over the counter and cheque payments, which does at least mean we keep control of payments.
I only learned this week that I could pay the credit card using the FD phone banking, but I did not like that as much as simply paying by cheque which is just the easiest thing to do (except for Barclaycard who won't accept cheque in the post).0 -

if I were to bank in the same manner as yourself I think I’d go absolutely nuts with frustration. Couldn’t think of anything worse than walking in to a bank or posting a cheque.
We don't draw much cash as that is quite a faff so we always put everything on the credit card and then pay the cheque every month. I even got the CURVE card which makes the credit card work as a contactless card, so really easy for anything when out shopping. I have to admit, the Barclaycard was clever as it has contactless built in and did not need the CURVE card but, unfortunately, difficult to sort the bill.
We just use cash for really small things like the newspaper. Many places don't even accept cash.0 -
I'm 99.9999% certain you can pay a Barclaycard by post with a cheque. Obviously all you need it paying in slips. And I'm 99.999% these are available.
Your alternatives may be to pay by cheque at a different bank or at a post office. Not sure how easy that is to do without a paying in slip - but would be straight forward with one.
I get the annoyance at having to pay by phone - always an issue if you get a digit wrong....but shouldn't be a problem once you have the card set up as one of your standard payments.
My suggestion would be to talk to the business account relationship manager (or whatever they are called this week). Harrumph at him/her about the lack of paying in slips for your personal Barclaycard. Intimate that you might consider having to move all your accounts elsewhere if this can't be resolved. I'm guessing they will find a way to help you...unless s/he is a complete dweeb.

You can use the Barclaycard paper BGC slip in HSBC branches with your First Direct cheque.
Alternatively, use First Direct telephone banking or set-up a full bill Direct Debit with Barclaycard using your FD account number/sort code.
Just call Barclaycard and tell them that the card is damaged and they'll post you a replacement.0 -

Mine did not.
I paid using FD telephone banking and will have to do the same next month, after which the card will just decease.0 -
I have two Barclaycards and the ways to pay differ - I've assumed the type of card determines the methods available.
- My Hilton Honors Barclaycard allows direct debit, bank transfer, QR code (via Pingit, which closed in the summer, or at an ATM), debit card, cash or cheque at a bank, or cheque in the post.
- My Barclaycard Forward allows direct debit, bank transfer, QR code, or debit card.
Debt Jan 2008: £45,566. *** June 2013: DEBT FREE! ***
Paid back just under £50,000 due to some interest added.
Dealt with my debt through a Step Change (CCCS) DMP.

Writing a cheque and sending by post with the giro slip is so easy.
FD don't offer the online stuff. I did do the first payment with telephone banking and relieved that Barclaycard sent me an email to confirm the payment received.0 -
I was with First Direct for 10 years before I switched away this summer.
They absolutely do support online banking, or app banking (their app is pretty great). You can do everything online that you can with any other bank.1 -
The basic conclusion from this thread is that the OP needs to check what is happening to his mail. Banks do not simply forget to send out debit cards: obviously it has been diverted or dumped by a lazy postie. And of course First Direct supports online banking, which works only once the customer has received the log-on details that are sent in the post. Given that these details have evidently been intercepted somehow, it is a wonder that no fraud has yet taken place.

I have online banking with Barclays for the business accounts and it really is great. Just not been able to get it for my personal FD accounts.0
