  • So basically, you went to the ombudsman because you believed you should have had your refund before anyone else when even EDF didn’t have it to refund to you and probably still don’t have it yet. Sounds like one of their advisors made a mistake in telling you to send in your documents. There’s no way an energy company is going to refund money until a final bill has been produced  No wonder it was rejected.

    As you wish.

A more rational way of looking at it, though, is that EDF issued a deadlock letter inviting me to refer the matter to the Energy Ombudsman, but then chose to raise an objection to that same referral on entirely spurious grounds including the provision of deliberate misinformation. They did this doubtless to avoid the fee of around £500 which would be payable. If you think those are the actions of a trustworthy company, then we must disagree.

As for your other odd suggestion, we're talking here of several hundred pounds, not a couple of quid, and if more people took EDF to the Ombudsman they'd be doing more to get the issues sorted out by putting enough staff on the job.

Companies like EDF rely on inertia to get away with cost cutting to boost their shareholders' dividends - if you prefer to allow them to do that, I'm afraid I don't.  This is a consumer website, and I, as a consumer, will use appropriate methods to persuade companies to act reasonably.  Your choice.

I seem to recall we (Doc_N, you and me) discussed this a few weeks and pages ago (link), and we expressed the opinion that complaints to the Ombudsman would go nowhere. And here we are.

Believe me, this isn’t going nowhere! It’s very much still a live issue, as EDF and the Energy Ombudsman are well aware.

And ultimately it’s probably also going to end up with the regulator in connection with the way that the Energy Ombudsman complaint has been handled, and the deliberate attempt by EDF to mislead.

We did, and I think we were right. Can’t see how the complaint can be taken on by the ombudsman. EDF can’t refund money when 1, they don’t know how much as no final bill has been produced yet & 2, no money has been transferred from the administer to EDF as yet. That’s not going to happen until final bills are produced and I think they will concentrate on the accounts that have been transferred to them before looking at the ones who jumped ship early on.

I've been trying to think of a better way of ensuring that you get moved to the very end of the queue for a refund, but try as I might, I can't beat taking a compliant to the Ombudsman about a SoLR process while the administrators are still working on the refunds...
Complaining about the Ombudsman as well is just the icing on the cake :)

Some pretty weak kneed people here, happy to let a huge overseas company walk all over them, tell a pack of lies to an Ombudsman, and just sit back and accept it.

Your choice - but it’s the proactive that succeed in life, while the majority who just sit back, moan, but do nothing about it just get trampled underfoot.

My approach takes very little time, but has a proven track record, both in terms of results and very substantial compensation received from companies who’ve not met reasonable service standards.

Sit back and do nothing if it suits you - but that’s exactly what dodgy companies want, hope and expect you to do.  Your choice, but your loss.   :D

    Hi All,

Has anybody had their first bill from EDF after their move from UP?
My reason for asking is that my 82 year old Mother has just been sent hers. They say their read for her electricity on 8/11/21 was 4557 but on 3/12/21 her read, which I entered from her smart meter, was 5779 so 1222kWh for 26 days.
Her closing meter reading with UP was 5409 so no idea where they have got 4557 as an opening read.
Her bill for 26 days, Gas and Electricity is £314.64p, £257.20p of this is electricity.
Her heating is gas, its a small 2 bed bungalow. Electricity is used for lighting and cooking.
Her smart meters are SMETS1 but it looks like they are sending some information to EDF as it appears she is using approx 5kWh of electricity/day
I live some distance from her so tried to phone but they would not speak to me due to data protection. She could phone them but I know she would get confused by the menu system.
I set up her account online and paid some of the bill but not the £314.64p.

So my question is really have you reeived your first bill and were the meter readings correct.

    Thanks

Get her to ring the complaints team direct. She can get a complaint raised & she needs to tell them that she gives authorisation for the complaint handler to speak to you. They can add you as a contact.
Then a dispute needs to be raised based on the reading final UP reading and the one you took. May take a while to be resolved but should be ok.

    Thanks @Curiousgirl1

She would honestly get all confused and muddled if she phoned. I'll see her soon and phone from her house and get authorisation.
The thing is they just appear to have picked a figure out the air and used it as a starting read. I have checked all her previous bills and the last time the reading was that was around April/May 2021.
