  • Third, how many payments are leaving my bank on the 1st of January? Going by that email, £36 and £86.

It might be worth going into your EDF account on their web-site, then going to "My bills and payments", and looking under the heading "Coming up" - on my account that gives a better preview of what is going to be taken rather than the emails.
Clicking on "My Direct Debit", on the other hand, gives an error "Sorry, we're having technical issues"!

That's telling me £86 on 01/01/2022.  They could have made their email a little clearer.
I wouldn't rely on that. It might be based on an assumption that the first ones are already "accounted for".

My schedule has three in December. A £26 just claimed today for one fuel, a £19 on 7th for the other fuel then a £45 payment for both combined on 20th

I've had a chat with EDF on the phone and they have told me only one payment will be collected, and that will be on 01/01/2022 for £86.00.
  • We’re nearly there - two emails yesterday from EDF, one asking for a meter read that I’ve given them today, one confirming that the DD is set up and ready to go, and, annoyingly, rounding the odd pennies from the previous UP DD DOWN to £7 - so it’s now even further below covering even the standing charge! Going to leave it be for the time being I think and just add money to the account manually to top up as needed.

I reached that point a few weeks ago, one DD already taken, one coming out of my bank on the 7th and then a joint one on 20th December and monthly after that.

But the switch has stuck at that point, and as I speculated above, I think it will remain so until UP issue final bills.
  • When I log in to my EDF account both fuels are now at stage 3 of 4 "Meter Reading" (where 4 is "Switch complete") and say "Unfortunately we didn’t receive your meter reading in time. Don’t worry, we’ll agree an estimated opening reading with your old supplier to set up your account" even though I gave my Gas reading on 28/11 and Electricity on 30/11, as requested, and shown in the "Submit a reading" area.

I was thinking that this means "switch complete" could be any day, but I guess it might be nearer to 3 weeks time.
I'm basing that 3 weeks on looking at the Ofgem guaranteed standards - https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/information-consumers/energy-advice-households/switching-energy-tariff-or-supplier#tab-570 - "Switch completes within 15 working days" is the standard that triggers £30 compensation if not kept. Of course this isn't really a switch, but it's being handled like one, so I hope that it will complete before Christmas.

However, from my past experience of switching, the final bill from a previous supplier can take a while to appear after the switch completes. On the same Ofgem link the standard is "Supplier sends a final bill within six weeks of a switch" - so even if my "switch" to EDF completes later this month, it might be that my final UP bill doesn't appear until early February.
And then, again from the same Ofgem link, the standard for repaying a credit balance is "Supplier refunds money owed on a credit balance within 10 working days of sending a final bill" so that could be late February.

So with my pessimistic hat on I'm not expecting my EDF account to show my UP credit balance until late February, but maybe I will be pleasantly surprised.
  • As of today, my gas has just moved to stage 4 - complete. Still at 3 for electricity.

I’m now a bit mystified - submitted the reading this morning, but there’s no sign of it on the account if I go to the website. Meanwhile, accessing the account on the app it tells me”we’re not ready for your meter reading yet” - say what?!

Where on the account are people seeing the “stage” details? I’m not seeing that.

I was transferred from GNE to EDF. They seem to be allergic to meter readings.

I see the stages as soon as I login, which is this page: https://my.edfenergy.com/myaccount

Both my gas and electric are both at stage 3, despite having provided meter readings recently.

Well that’s bizarre - just logged in again and the home page I get is now completely different to previous, and I too am seeing the stages - stage 3. I’ve also been asked again for a meter reading so have input that again and it’s now telling me that I’ve submitted one, so that’s also reassuring. I assume that the accounts are taking a little while to catch up with the correspondence.
