Big hug for you Jules - obviously a devastating time for the children but also a huge adjustment for you. We'll all be here to help you through what comes, as well as the weight loss.
Sorry haven't been able to post much recently peeps, and I'm afraid I still won't be able to reply to all of you (have read all your posts though) as I am now on a computer limit!! It's for my own good - been mega busy trying to sort out our money (which is always a challenge when there's so little of it) and as a result sleep has gone out of the window. So we're imposing a time limit on the net for now til I'm back on track and in balance. In the meantime, love to you all - KPC, is it your birthday tomorrow? Everyone who's turning 40, what a fantastic way to start your 40s, getting in shape for the best decade yet! BB, your PM was just a msg I sent you...
Sorry no more time now, but if this helps inspire anyone, we're using up our storecupboard stuff and had HM veggie chilli from the batch I made the other day with pot barley - looks like sugar puffs but doesn't taste like them! - and it was really yummy! Oh, also, Julian Graves has it's half price sale on at the mo so a good time to stock up there. Not much on over weekend so will be on properly then and remind me to post the mushroom soup I made tonight, it's a scrummy recipe! xxThe 1,000 Day Challenge:Feb 16, 2016500/30,000

Hello again, and thank you for the welcome Victory.
Well, after the shock of the grand weigh in this morning, I now have to lose about 4 st!
I had a fairly good day, unfortunately not much exercise but, sensible about my intake.
One day at a time!!
Hi LilacLillie, IMHO slimming clubs do work for some and not for others. I still believe that one has to be in the 'right' frame of mind for the initial kick start, otherwise it can be a waste of time and money. I always lost weight at these clubs, my problem is keeping it offAs someone else said, 'good clubs work'
Bon Chance

Hugs for jules:D
suggs I am gonna' stick around this thread until you are a size s:D
Just got back from seeing Grease at the theatre and it was ab fab, highly recommended to each and everyone of you lovely peeps:D I loved it but talk about a trial for the dieters, the lady infront of me munched a galaxy bar, next to me a family size of jelly babies, the other side past my H a box of mint choc sticks, the smell of popcorn, one and all drinking alcohol, the noise of crisp eating,:rotfl: :rotfl: I got out my apple and was a good girlthe xmas wait is coming off:rotfl: :rotfl:
Everyone loved it so much you could hear them saying they wanted to go back and see it again, my favourite singer was the actress that played rizzo and the dj singer was excellent. Perfect way to spend an evening, better than big brother by miles;)
Lilac WW works for me by doing it myself with the recipe books, point scales, pedometre etc but you have to do what is best for you, some people need the support of a group, I need this thread to keep me on the straight and narrow, somehow it does not seem so bad if you know others are in the same boat as you and it is easier to loose the weight...entirely your decision, one bad group does not make them all bad x
carmen Remember to not look always at the 4 stone you have to loose as it may put you off, try to break it down into smaller lumps, like 2lb a week or 10% of your body weight or I would like to loose x amount by x day because I am going to a wedding etc, I had 5 1/2 stone to loose and would not have done it if I could not have broken it down to achievable results x0 -
Lilaclillie anything is justifiable if you want to justify it. Like victory said, the ultimate MSE way of doing things is to follow the intake plan but rely on the support here, rather than go to class. If you wanted to go to class though, you could say that the £5 a week would cover itself by coming out of the processed food, alcohol and cr*p that you would have bought but aren't buying now because seasonal fruit n veg is so much cheaper.
Also, you will probably find that classes have changed a lot in the 10 years since you last went, the emphasis now is very much on support, dignity and an adult-adult relationship with the group and the consultant. I can only speak for my experiences with Slimming World, but I'm sure the WW attendees would say the same for that.
Beanie, thanks for the concern with MrsA. She won't be able to walk for a couple of months yet, but she's back at work now and enjoying having her every whim sorted out for her.0 -
Hugs for Jules,
What a massive upheaval!! maybe when it all settles down you can use the kids to your advantage by taking them swimming or to the park? In the meantime thugh all the best while things settle down...0 -

[quote=LilacLillie;7654857]I have tried to lose weight on my own, but its not worked.
Now is the time of year to think about slimming clubs traditionally, being Jan: and new year resoultions etc:
So I am asking: Are slimming clubs worth the fees?
The only diet I ever went on was 10yrs ago, SW. I lost 3 stone, it stayed off untill the thryroid problem.
The class was s**t, rather like the 'Little Britain' slimming sketch on TV.
I just followed the diet, didn't have any support at class, in fact I think they got a bit !!!!!y when anyone lost 1lb.
That has put me off, along with the Paul Mckenna book I've just started to read, telling me diets don't work.
Has anyone read this ( I can make you thin)? and did it work?
What to do? Moneywise and support wise?

LilacLillie you've asked quite a few good questions here and I'd like to give you my opinion and my experience on them even though others have already answered pretty well.
Firstly: you've said you've tried to do it on your own but haven't been sucessful. I also tried to lose weight by myself but without my weekly meeting I was constantly cheating myself and saying I could start again. Because I now pay the £5.50 weekly meeting fee for weightwatchers, I have much more motivation to lose weight and getting weight off is worth it.
Secondly: You've asked are slimming clubs worth the fees? I personally would have spent at least £5.50 per week on junk, rubbish and takeaways which I rarely have now so although I'm spending an average of £22 per month on weekly meetings, I'm saving at least that amount too, so it pays for itself.
Thirdly: I attended both WW and SW classes (although SW was only for a few weeks). I found the WW classes much better. The SW image therapy took so long and I didn't like going round the entire class asking each person how they got along and how they did it. My WW meetings are informative talks on healthy eating and give you tips, hints and advice or sometimes just motivation. You don't have to talk at your meeting unless you want to. Image Therapy does suit some people, just not me.
Finally: yes, I've read Paul McKenna's book, his cognitive behavioural therapy is actually the only new thing that I've read. His other tips were in other books published years ago. Yes, eat only when your hungry, eat with awareness etc are all very good, but can you be that brutally honest with yourself and eat tiny portions? I know I couldn't. It is useful but I would advise doing it along with another programm which limits your calorie/points etc. intake just to keep an eye.
