I have eventually resorted to making a formal complaint via Resolver due to a lack of action by Shell Customer Services on my Gas Meter issues - incorrect meter on my account, existing smart meter had failed, and details not updated since Shell arranged a replacement meter over a month ago ago. Since my complaint I was contacted by phone within 2 days and presented with an action plan. I'll let you all know how this plays out, but seems I now have their attention.
  • Pretty sure we used to be with Green before they went bust but not had contact from any new supplier since.  Last bill paid was September last year.

Finally had first contact from Shell. Letter addressed to the occupier (so don’t seem to have my details yet) apologising for delay and that will get first bill in a few days covering 5 months.

So much for Shell’s optimistic action plan. They contacted me this week and said the action to fix my gas meter is delayed with no estimated date. My meters and my online account are still not showing the new increased tariffs but they are asking me to increase my direct debit to way more than it should be. Shambles!

OK just obtained details of my new Shell tarif.  48.26p SC, 33.39p peak, and 17.4123 off peak.

Based on annual usage of 3,637 peak and 1498 off peak electricity only (we have no gas)

Green total cost was £802 pa
Shell Flexible 6 was  £1,216 pa
Shell Flexible 7 is now £1,651  pa  So only a 206% increase in 9 months, Wots not to like?.  Way to go, roll on 6 months time.

I don't have gas and it is the gas price inflation that is the problem - OK Shell advise in their nice little brochure for me that 38.6% of the electricity they sell me is generated using gas.

Something does not appear to be correct.  Someone is having a giraffe.

That's a rather poor ratio of off-peak to peak, 29% to 71%. Your average price per kWh is 28.76p. I think your tariff puts you in South Wales where the single-rate electricity tariff is 28.29p/kWh.
Your peak use should be much less and your off-peak much more. Can you shift more use to off-peak?
If not, you should think about changing to single-rate electricity.

It's a poor ratio because we have no gas so it is electricity for everything apart from the Coal fired central heating and hot water.  Washing machine and dishwasher are both on timers to run through the night as is the hot water when the coal fire is not running.  But one cannot really move cooking dinner to the middle of the night!
Yes, with Shell my  yearly average makes it more economic to move to a single rate tariff but I am just about to do the 6 months without the coal fire so night-time electricity consumption will be above average.  So I will stick with the tariff for now and look to move in November.

What is irritating is that gas is a 100% fossil fuel, electricity gen is not.  To assist the move away from fossil fuels a 20% levy is put on electricity that is not put on gas.  So people such as ourselves who cannot buy cheaper, non-levied gas, are picking up a larger proportion of the excess being charged to move away from gas!  Why can't it be 10% on both gas and electricity, or whatever pro-rate factor based on value consumption?

I totally agree with you. Until we moved into our retirement flat a couple of years ago, we lived in rural Lincolnshire with no gas so relied on electricity and a log burner, no central heating. We also ran as much as possible overnight. Since moving to the flat we no longer have the log burner or dishwasher (kitchen too small) and we are not allowed to use the washing machine before 8am. We dispensed with the storage heaters and changed to a single tariff. We are back on the south east coast again and this has made a great saving for us now.
