So it seems the Shell Energy October 2021 Variable tariff is well above the price cap. Does every variable tariff have to be below the price cap or just the "default" one? I'm guessing here but maybe Shell are planning to move Green customers to this October 2021 tariff and you will have to choose to switch to the default "Flexible 6" tariff to benefit from the Ofgem price cap. It's likely that during the switching process, which usually takes ages, we'll have no choice but to pay the inflated prices.
That tariff is price capped. The TIL includes VAT though, which isn't included in the Ofgem figures. There is also a mistake on at least one TIL where they're listing standard credit prices instead of direct debit prices.
Thanks, yes you are right, it says that TIL is for Direct Debit, but it's not. As you say it's likely for Credit Meter. Just had an email from Cheap Energy Club and they say:

"You have been moved to the Flexible 6 variable tariff, which is Shell's standard tariff and follows the price cap."

Yeh.. I'm hoping they fix this soon and aren't trying to pull a fast one!

Having been stitched up by Ofgem transferring me to Scottish Power, I have initiated a switch to e-on from green as I trust them more than other suppliers. Shell power have never been listed as a viable cost effective supplier, so I refuse to have anything to do with them. I've made a point of downloading all my Green energy details, credit balance etc, and expect some "aggro" doing the switch, and I won't accept losing my credit balance even if it means going to court, I'm totally p**sed off with how I've been treated by the energy companies and utterly disgusted by the totally useless Ofgem.
  • I had an email from the MSE Energy Club today - Green has moved to Shell and the tariff is "Flexible 6". I had a look at the comparisons in the Energy Club and there's nothing coming up as a better deal. So I will stay with Shell and keep checking the deals available.

    According to mse cheap energy club, my shell “flexible 6” economy 7 rates are;

    Unit rate25.8111p per kWh
Economy 7 unit rate10.486p per kWh
    Standing charge25.169p per day

im actually on economy 10, but I assume shell will bill me for e7. Well that’s what I’m hoping.

Got the same email (although I'm on normal rates). The Flexible 6 rates do appear to be better than what we were expecting, so I guess Ofgem have done a good deal there. It's about £200 better than I was expecting and virtually the same as the best supplier on the market for me right now (YMMV). Guess I'll stick around for a bit with them.

They're at the Ofgem price cap, so the highest they could be.

Well, I can find several "Flexible" tariffs on their website ...
Enter your postcode, and so on ...
And the list of tariffs includes:

    Flexible 5
    Flexible 6
    Flexible April 2021
    Flexible October 2021
    Flexible Prepayment 5

    Not what I'd call simplified!
Thanks for that link. Assuming I'm placed on the Flexible Oct 21 tariff, here's a comparison of what I am currently on with Green with the new Shell tariff:

    Elec:

    Green 15.78 p/kwh Standing Ch/ day 22.0
    Shell   22.31                                        29.47

So a 34% increase in my Elec standing charge, and a 41% increase in my elec tariff

    Gas:

    Green 3.28 p/kwh Standing Ch/ day   22.0
    Shell   4.396                                        30.78

So a 40% increase in my Gas standing charge, and a 34% increase in my gas tariff

My projection from Green was for an annual bill of £1360. I shudder to think what I'll be paying with Shell.
I've now had an email from the MSE Cheap (sic) Energy Club informing me I'll be on the Shell Flexible 6 tariff. Here is the comparison with my current Green Yew tariff (which was to rise significantly from Oct 1st anyway):

    Elec:

    Green 15.78 p/kwh Standing Ch/ day 22.0
    Shell   21.18                                        24.86

So a 13% increase in my Elec standing charge, and a 34% increase in my elec tariff

    Gas:

    Green 3.28 p/kwh Standing Ch/ day   22.0
    Shell   4.174                                       26.11

So a 18.6% increase in my Gas standing charge, and a 27% increase in my gas tariff

    That means a £90.74
Elec standing charge, and a £95.30 Gas standing charge, so £186 total.

    On last year's usage, this means a gas bill of £593 + £95 = £688.

    And an electricity bill of £1014 + £91 = £1105.

So total energy bill of £1793.

On my current tariff (which was going up on Oct 1st anyway) I would have paid £1300.

So I'll be paying 38% more. Which isn't much different to what my Green tariff would have charged me after their planned price rise, which I was hoping to avoid by switching.

The MSE email says there are no cheaper tariffs out there at the moment, so looks like I'll be staying with Shell (and desperately keeping down my energy energy consumption).

What is the Flexible October 2021 tariff then? For me that tariff is higher, but it's a SVR tariff.

Check the TIL - at the top it says it's Ofgem price capped. There's a mistake on Flexible October 2021 at the moment where the standard (pay on receipt) prices are showing up as the direct debit prices too - where they should be a few percent lower.
