But octopus don't have monthly 'billing date' hence my question
Octopus say they'll generate a bill every time you submit meter readings, or every three months if you don't submit any. (I've got a smart meter so I can't confirm this from personal experience.)
Octopus also update your account balance each time they receive a payment or issue a bill.

Should I be cancelling the Avro DD after all?

It's up to you, but one thing you must not do is create an Octopus DD yourself without cancelling the Avro one, since this seemingly causes double-billing.

Personally I did set up an Octopus DD and cancelled the Avro mandate.

Confused over Direct Debits. We were advised to keep the Avro one in place and that it would be converted to Octopus in due couse.  My Octopus account is saying I have no current DD arrangement but is still taking the old Avro amount each month. Should I be cancelling the Avro DD after all?
According to Octopus, your DD will get moved over to them, but the consensus on here seems to be to cancel the Avro DD then set up a new one with Octopus. In setting up the new one, the Octopus system will default to the date and amount of your Avro one, even before they show your account balance. You may miss a payment due to the 10 days it takes to set one up, but you can always cover that if necessary with a manual payment to Octopus.

Just received an email from Octopus telling me my switch from Avro is underway as well as the tariffs I will be on.

Interesting, I take it you were in mid switch to Avro when they ceased trading? I too should be hearing something soon then.

Now fully transferred to Octopus as of yesterday but for some reason not on a fixed DD, “You are paying a variable amount depending on your usage”, I didn't ask for that and as all EX Avro customers must have been on a fixed DD I was expecting the same terms, though it doesn't matter to me, I don't mind paying on receipt of the bill but I wonder why some are on fixed and some on variable, or am I missing something.

That “You are paying a variable amount depending on your usage” message will change and show your monthly Direct Debit amount.
Just give it a few more days for all the bits of the switching process to fall into place.

Can't see it mentioned here https://octopus.energy/help-and-faqs/categories/bills-and-payments but there's no harm in asking.
