What rate are we paying for electric and gas in this inbetween period with effectively no supplier while waiting for the new one?
Whatever the deemed rate of the new supplier is. We'll find out who ofgem chooses  in the coming days/weeks.
It won't be cheap, and will be considerably more expensive than what we were paying with avro.
How the heck is this a thing?
It's a thing because the other option is turning your power and gas off until the switch is sorted out. It was decided years ago that it would be better to leave consumers connected.
If you would rather turn your own supplies off until you've been told what the new rates are, you can do so.

Further to my earlier post, I decided to start the switch tonight, I'd been looking for a new deal for the past week as my 1 year fixed term is up on 7th October 2021, I'd been considering who to go to all day today before I heard the news about Avro and it was a toss up between staying with Avro (£96pm D/D would go up to £124pm) for another year or moving  to Scottish power on £145pm D/D but getting £150 cashback and it being a 3 year fixed term deal, which is what swayed me as I can't see energy prices coming down anytime soon, especially with the cap rise next month, and if by a miracle they do, there are no exit fees and by waiting (as suggested) I could have ended up on a much higher tariff and worse if energy prices go up more miss out on this price and possibly see the cashback offer withdrawn, and I don't trust the energy companies/OFGEN to sort it out quickly so could have ended up on a much higher tariff running up a big bill while I waited, which I couldn't afford (this rise is going to be tough enough)  as I'm on a tight budget.
How do you get the £150 cash back?

Had a look at the big six and Scottish Power seem the cheapest.

Topcashback although it's been reduced to £121.50 today

  • I've only just renewed with them a couple of hours ago lol.

Lets see how hassle free getting our credit balances will be.  I decided to stay because a chap from Utility Point was on the radio saying he was doing the same thing for their customers switching them and their credit balances to EDF but made no commitment as to when customers would see their money again.

I'm tempted to double-down and see if I can switch to Bulb next!
If I'm not mistaken Bulb has also stopped trading.

What rate are we paying for electric and gas in this inbetween period with effectively no supplier while waiting for the new one?
Whatever they decide in the next couple of weeks. Someone is having to buy energy at short notice to supply us right now.

I went through SoLR last year with YE, I want to see how SAR works out.

What is a ‘Special Administration Regime’ (SAR)?

We are most likely to use a SAR if we can't appoint a new supplier using the Supplier of Last Resort process, for example because of the size of the supplier that is in financial difficulty. In this scenario, a special administrator is appointed to run the company until it is either:

    • rescued (e.g. through a restructuring)
    • sold
    • has its customers transferred to other suppliers.

The process helps reduce the risk of financial failure spreading across the energy market, for example where costs of supplying energy and honouring credit balances would affect the ability of a SoLR to serve their existing customers. It therefore helps maintain market stability, and in turn protects consumers. Importantly, the process also ensures all customers of the failed energy supplier continue to get energy.

The Energy Act 2011 includes provisions to establish a SAR for energy supply companies. Ofgem (through our governing board ‘GEMA’), can apply to the Court for an Energy Supply Company Administration Order with the consent of the Secretary of State. There is a maximum 14 days for the Order to be secured by the Courts, if the supplier has notified Ofgem that it intends to enter administration. The Secretary of State also has the power to make an application.

The Secretary of State can make grants and loans to the company in administration and may also give guarantees for any sum borrowed while it is in administration.

Approval from Her Majesty’s Treasury is needed for any public financial support that is made to the administrator.

The administrator’s role is to ensure energy supplies are continued at the lowest cost which it is reasonably practicable to incur, until the arrangements are made to allow the supplier to operate or be rescued, sold or have its customers transferred.

Where Ofgem is making the application for an Energy Supply Administration Order, we consider on a case by case basis whether to propose an insolvency practitioner chosen by us or to seek the appointment of the administrator proposed by the company or its creditors where relevant.

Ofgem has been working with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and Her Majesty’s Treasury to ensure that the government would support a SAR if it was necessary.
