I do fear for customers once this gets resolved. Once a SOLR is appointed, it can take months to set up accounts. Meantime, the customers will be on higher rates but the DD remains the same. Eventually, a catch up bill will be issued which will be a shock to many.

This whole crisis should however wake people up to the fact that they shouldn't just rely on a DD at £X or a smart meter.

They need to be aware of their usage and tariff (whatever that may be), check their bills and keep an eye on their account debit or credit levels.

The media could do a better job of informing customers exactly how the cap works, so people can calculate their personal costs, rather than rely on the "typical user" soundbite.
I absolutely agree about knowing your usage and credit.
Can you clear up the smart meter part a bit, as I was under the impression it gave you usage in real-time? I don't have a smart meter myself (avoided attempts to make an appointment) but I'm sure my new provider will insist, so I should probably read up on how it works better.

I am in the process of switching to green. The date to start is 26th..l am just inside the 14 day cancellation, shall l exercise it? I don't want to be stuck on a high tariff for months until it's sorted.
Yes I have cancelled in a similar situation. Ask your current supploer to object - it took me 10 mins. It feels like it would be far more complex to let the switch play out and end up with a SOLR that then takes 6 months to merge accounts etc

Sorry yes.   Some people are under the impression that a smart meter "does it all for you" and becomes completely hands off, fire and forget etc.

We've had ours for only 3 months and they've been enlightening (especially for gas).

I've always kept my own spreadsheet of our readings/tariff/cost and haven't stopped just because we have smart meters.

They are a useful tool...if used correctly, in conjunction with actually reading and understanding your bills.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)
  • Well I’ve just found out about this. Couldn’t get into my account but last I looked I was £228 in credit. Submitted readings on Sunday. We’ll see what happens now and with whom…..

Thank you. I have emailed my current a supplier as they don't have a telephone number...! Pure Planet - don't fancy their chances much either to be honest

In the phone to Green but doubt we will get far.
  • Oh well, this will be interesting
My transfer to Avro happened on Monday.
I only know this because I contacted my previous supplier So Energy and they told me it went through.
I've not had an email or anything from Avro since I signed up a month ago

The thing is I haven't given Avro any initial meter readings as I don't have a login or any way to do it.
Avro have already taken an advanced Direct Debit payment before the switch happened.
I cant get my refund from SO Energy without meter readings as they need to come from Avro.

no idea how this will play out.

  • Was only yeaterday I logged in to see where my account was at which was -£35 and enter meter readings.

Today I find out they closed down, I have also cancelled my direct debit. Wonder who the new supplier will be? If I do switch what's best to do, keep to the big 6?
Google gives you answers use it.........
  • Guilty face.
Following my intervention we are in the process of changing the energy supplier at my mother's house.
As they offered a fixed tariff and zero penalty clause I promoted Avro.
The changeover is (was) due on 1st October.

However today Avro took the first advance direct debit from the household account.
I'm assuming the direct debit guarantee will kick in or the money will transferred to the eventual new supplier.
Nevertheless it seems a bit rich that the company withdrew the money.

DDs have to be requested several days in advance.

I contacted mine through live chat, maybe you can contact Pure Planet in their app, might be a quicker response than email.
