We cancelled our DD earlier this evening and took photos of the meter readings.

Unable to get into Avro to get my last statement so no idea what amount of credit there was. We only did our last meter reading submission ten days ago.

I have been downloading my statements each month, and keep a record of my meter readings, so can probably work out a rough figure I'm in credit.

We learnt from the Breeze situation in 2019 (they took the next DD) and cancelled the Avro direct debit as soon as we heard the news this afternoon.

With so many companies going down at the same time there's going to be an admin nightmare on the SOLR change over. I won't expect my remaining credit until next year.

I've done the same, I haven't downloaded any of my statements. Although I do have a spreadsheet that tracks my credit balance from the statements and it's about what my monthly direct debit is (which is slightly more than my usage by about £5).

So I might be waiting for about £9-10 (unless they play games messing around with the statements now I can't see them).

The annoying thing is I'm now going to be on a really expensive tariff that I can't get off and the SOLR can delay taking my account on knowing that the longer it takes, the more money they make.

I escaped Scottish Power relatively unscathed, after receiving a mysterious £30 credit. My luck can't hold out.

  • Further to my earlier post, I decided to start the switch tonight, I'd been looking for a new deal for the past week as my 1 year fixed term is up on 7th October 2021, I'd been considering who to go to all day today before I heard the news about Avro and it was a toss up between staying with Avro (£96pm D/D would go up to £124pm) for another year or moving  to Scottish power on £145pm D/D but getting £150 cashback and it being a 3 year fixed term deal, which is what swayed me as I can't see energy prices coming down anytime soon, especially with the cap rise next month, and if by a miracle they do, there are no exit fees and by waiting (as suggested) I could have ended up on a much higher tariff and worse if energy prices go up more miss out on this price and possibly see the cashback offer withdrawn, and I don't trust the energy companies/OFGEN to sort it out quickly so could have ended up on a much higher tariff running up a big bill while I waited, which I couldn't afford (this rise is going to be tough enough)  as I'm on a tight budget.
  • What rate are we paying for electric and gas in this inbetween period with effectively no supplier while waiting for the new one?
  • What's the advice on DD cancellation?  I completed my switch to Avro yesterday, and the first £106 payment was taken a few days ago, so I'm in credit at the moment.  I can afford to keep payments ticking along and as we enter autumn/winter I'll almost certainly be in debit in a few months amyway.  Is it best to do so and just await the new supplier and any balance reconciliation?

I sumbitted my readings to Avro yesterday, so will report them to Shell as well, because I doubt Avro are going to inform them and I have a small credit balance with them.

Whatever the deemed rate of the new supplier is. We'll find out who ofgem chooses  in the coming days/weeks.
It won't be cheap, and will be considerably more expensive than what we were paying with avro.

How the heck is this a thing? I'm alright but some poorer people are going to be hit by a massive bill that they can't afford, and had NO idea they even owed? Avro closed with NO notification to customers, how can people be put into a debt they never even knew they owed, due to a company backing out of a contract without informing the other party?

Personally I've no idea whether it's worth switching immediately and delaying my credit (but being on a lower tarrif), or staying and getting my credit sooner (and being on a higher tarrif) in the mean-time, as I can't see my balance! They also haven't billed me for the previous two months (since I joined them), despite me providing readings. Now I know why.

You may still hear from Avro - the announcement of their demise was only made mid-afternoon yesterday. They can't say anything to customers before that, and you do have to have some consideration for the staff who will only themselves have heard the news at that time or very shortly before.

How do you get the £150 cash back?

Had a look at the big six and Scottish Power seem the cheapest.
