Avro Energy Ceasing to Trade

Just seen this on the Avro website

Avro Energy is ceasing to trade. Ofgem, the energy regulator, is appointing a new supplier for its customers.

Customers need not worry, their supplies are secure and domestic credit balances are protected.

Ofgem’s advice is not to switch, but to wait until they appoint a new supplier for you. This will help make sure that the process of handing customers over to a new supplier, and honouring domestic customers’ credit balances, is as hassle free as possible for customers.

Support and advice is available on the Ofgem website for both domestic customers and non-domestic customers. Alternatively, if customers need additional support, they can call Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 or email them via their webform. Advice will also be shared on Ofgem’s twitter @ofgem and facebook channels.

I've only just renewed with them a couple of hours ago lol.

Lets see how hassle free getting our credit balances will be.  I decided to stay because a chap from Utility Point was on the radio saying he was doing the same thing for their customers switching them and their credit balances to EDF but made no commitment as to when customers would see their money again.

I'm tempted to double-down and see if I can switch to Bulb next!

Is there any advice for what those who were in the middle of switching to Avro should do?

For many weeks they were coming up as the cheapest on all the comparison sites, I switched on 9th September and they have just taken a advance direct debit from me - yet my switch is supposed to complete on the 30th.

Will we automatically stay with the current supplier or do we still need to contact them to officially cancel?

My transfer was supposed to complete 4/10. I'm assuming we'll stay with current supplier (EDF for me) but we'll have that confirmed in time.
  • Avro are not picking up the phone, and it took me somewhere between 4-6 weeks to get an email response to my renewal query.

Personally, I'd be on the phone to the bank and ask what they can do to refund/block your direct debit, then call your current energy supplier and ask them whether you will need to take action or sit tight.

Your transfer will continue but instead of ending up with Avro, your new supplier will be whoever Ofgem appoint to take over their customers

Edit - ignore this read it as you were switching away from Avro. Will leave it up for those that might be in the process of switching away.

Just hold tight and see what happens. With any luck it will complete.

Hopefully with so many going it will take a while for the solr process to be implemented and hopefully by that time switches will have completed. If they do compete and you get switched away as part of solr, you can deal with that as part of erroneous switch process.

I presume if they've ceased trading no further direct debit will be taken. I only ask because I've got a dd coming out it  two days time.
  • WOW - that is going to hurt - they had 600,000 customers over 2 years ago and have no doubt continued to grow - frequently featuring as a best buy on MSE Cheap Energy Club.

They sure as hell won't be the last.

The billing systems are likely to still be running so theres a good chance it will come out automatically.
