  • Can someone answer the question I asked earlier, please?

Did Santander offer their credit card to you during the application for current account?
HSBC and Nationwide did it when I opened their current accounts online-.

Many of you obviously opened new Santander accounts now, so just tell me Yes or No. Thanks :)

  • Well, either I had a customer service rep who didn't know what he was talking about .....or .... I can clear up a couple of points.

First - According to everyone on here you have to go into branch to switch into an existing account.  I got through on the phone (after a wait of about 40 minutes ....) Told him I wanted to make an appointment and what it was for. He said 'we can do that over the phone for you....' but couldn't because the relevant department closed at 6 and it was now 6:03. I mentioned all the commments on here and he said 'we have been made aware in branch that we can do this over the phone'

Second, I asked him the direct question about direct debits and he said they just have to be on the account being switched into - so no need to set up on the donor account.

So, we'll see what the customer services rep says when I finally get through tomorrow.

If either of these proves to be incorrect, it will turn into a 'misinformation' complaint ....

Just to show a completely different response from 2 different Santander "Switch Team" CS agents who I rung yesterday, and today, using the number on page 2 of this thread ...... they both insist that as an existing customer, you have to switch 2 active DD's! I asked them where in the T&C's it says this, and I basically got the run-around from both of the agents.

The gist of their explanation was that it was in the "General Switch T&C's", not in the "Santander Switcher Cashback T&C's" which is easy to find on their web pages, and is being quoted by many on here. When I challenged them to point to where it says this, I got the usual "please hold while I check on this". When they came back to me, they simply repeated that this is what a supervisor has told them and the information was there on the website.

It seems given that both agents said almost the same thing word for word leads me to believe that any other Forumites who rings up the Switch Team instead of arranging a Branch visit, may get a variety of responses regarding the question of setting up the DD's, depending on who they talk to and what their particular supervisor has told them.

I have now taken the belt and braces approach of setting up 2 x DD's on the donor account that should be taken at least a fortnight before I set the switch date (to allow for any mishaps!). I will also pay in £1000 (and eventually withdraw the bulk of it) as a separate transaction from the switch, to leave no wiggle room on that condition!

One point to note about the questions I was asked when I was arranging the switch. I was asked when I want the switch to go through ... "Immediately or at a future date"? .... I opted for a date in early October, and was told the Switch would occur 7 working days later. I corrected the agent and said I wanted the switch to go through on that particular date, not 7 days later! He said then I would have to pick a date 7 days earlier to make sure that the date of the switch occurred when I wanted it to. In all the many switches I have done, I have never been asked to set the date that the process of switching starts .... always the date of the actual switch! Just something to watch out for!
  • Question regarding the switch offer in Santander although sorry for a slight change of topic in the discussion.

Has anyone applied for a switch without the overdraft option? I'd like to know whether you guys had a hard or soft check on your credit file?

I'd like to switch from First Direct, but don't want to have any new record on my file. I also don't want an overdraft and I've heard some banks may do only a soft search if you don't take overdraft which would be great for me.

    Many thanks

Even if they only did a soft search - when the account appeared on your file the record of its existence would be there. Is there any reason why you don’t want it to appear? Something like a mortgage application coming up soon? I don’t think most banks are worried much about current accounts as such.

I'm an existing Santander 123 Lite customer (joint account) and applied for a new 123 Everyday account this morning to switch from a little used First Direct account (both accounts in my sole name) without overdraft facility.

The new account was open within about two minutes of the application being submitted on line with a flurry of emails and an onscreen acknowledgement showing the sort code and account number. If there was a check, it was a very soft check indeed.

If you were the switcher I'm pretty sure 'not'.

If you were just referrer, you 'participated', so still probably not.. but less sure... :)

If you can do it easily, maybe worth giving it a go...

The Terms and Conditions for the switching offer published on the Santander web site are crystal clear to me on this point. The only requirement is to set up two Direct Debits on the Santander account within 60 days of requesting the switch. There is nothing to suggest that any DDs must already exist on the old account and be transferred as part of the switch.

The only thing that's not completely clear to me is whether DDs that already exist on the Santander account prior to the switch would qualify, or whether two new DDs must be set up within the 60 day window. My guess is that pre-existing DDs would count, but I'm intending to take the belt-and-braces approach on this and set up two new ones anyway.
