  • Nice that you can transfer cashback earned immediately and not have to wait until the 12 months to do so. Also noticed that they round up, which is unusual in my experience.

just had a nightmare experience with chase.
got a message via the app asking to authorise a payment (from just eat) this wasnt a order i had made so i declined it. almost immediately i got a phone call from a number 08003763333 ( which is the chase number) male said he was from chase and believed i had been victim of attempted fraud...he stated he was going to access my account to do some checks. he gave me the last 4 digits of my card and at this point i thought it was all legit.

however he then said he was going to send me a notification via the app asking me to authorise a new device to be added to account to verify the security steps...sure enough a message popped up asking me to authorise geralds iphone...i declined this and now being suspicious ended the call and phoned chase direct....
after 30 mins waiting to speak to someone i eventually got through to someone who stated she had never heard of this type of scam ( whilst waiting i had googled it and it seems its a very common scam)
she was unable to say how someone would be able to access the app to send me notifications and all she could do was change my card details to hopefully stop it happening again.
the whole conversation with chase took over an hour and consisted of her just reading off a sheet asking set questions.

as a result i have transferred my money out of chase and will be closing the account
What did you search and what were the results?

It would help others understand how a potential fraudster was able to initiate an app notification to authorise a new device.

prresumably the fraudster accessed the justeat account, got the last 4 digits of card and phone number of op and ordered something triggering the payment popupon the  op's chase app

then the fraudster called op, number spoofed chase, and attempted to add their phone

But how did their attempted addition of their phone trigger a push notification rather than a one time code by SMS? You can't authorise a new device using your existing device, there is no option to do this. It is also necessary to enter the correct passcode in order to progress to authorisation.
I don't think we can rule out the possibility that the call and push notification were genuine, and the OP simply misread the notification due to the suspicion that it was someone trying to take over the account. Chase do send out such notifications, merely for the purposes of identification, when they call you. Obviously it wouldn't say it was to authorise a new device, but in the heat of the moment it could have been dismissed without being read carefully.
It's perfectly sensible to dismiss, hang up and call back in this situation if in any doubt, but I don't see how this could have been a scammer.

Or a 2 part SMS based  'trick'

a message popped up asking me to authorise geralds iphone

to then be followed by the Chase code SMS, which Gerald asks you to kindly provide him with ' for verification'.

With popup notifications, if you are under stress, it may be easy to misidentify the source app.

Yes, that's a possibility. OP would be able to confirm by checking SMS history.

Or Notification history, if that goes back far enough.

Is that because the Chase physical card details are setup for C&P/contactless payments only and not online payments? Guessing I couldn’t use the physical card details for an online train ticket purchase for collection owing to the same reason?
You wouldn't be able to use the physical card details online because there's no way (so far as I know) of finding out the CVV for the physical card.  Airtime Rewards only needs the 16-digit card number and expiry date.

Please update with wether your chase card works at the sainsburys pay at pump. Would be good to know if it works for someone else!
Will do, it will be next week at the earliest now as I went today and still haven't received my card yet. I noticed today the machine asks for a PIN to authorise up to £100 at Sainsbury's then when you start fueling it says max £99. As I understand it, since the new system came in, it should authorise £100 or up to the maximum available balance, whichever is smaller. We shall see.
Tried at Sainsbury's Pay at Pump today and the card was declined. Looking at the Chase app it tried to authorise for £100 and I had less than £100 in the account (but greater than £0). According to the MSE article I read, that's not how it should work (I should have been allowed to fill up to the account balance of ~£50). In the end I paid with a different card.

Link to MSE article referred to above: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2021/07/changes-to-pay-at-pump-up-to-p100-withheld-from-customers-accoun/ . There may have been a more recent one than that, but I couldn't find it.
