just had a nightmare experience with chase.
got a message via the app asking to authorise a payment (from just eat) this wasnt a order i had made so i declined it. almost immediately i got a phone call from a number 08003763333 ( which is the chase number) male said he was from chase and believed i had been victim of attempted fraud...he stated he was going to access my account to do some checks. he gave me the last 4 digits of my card and at this point i thought it was all legit.

however he then said he was going to send me a notification via the app asking me to authorise a new device to be added to account to verify the security steps...sure enough a message popped up asking me to authorise geralds iphone...i declined this and now being suspicious ended the call and phoned chase direct....
after 30 mins waiting to speak to someone i eventually got through to someone who stated she had never heard of this type of scam ( whilst waiting i had googled it and it seems its a very common scam)
she was unable to say how someone would be able to access the app to send me notifications and all she could do was change my card details to hopefully stop it happening again.
the whole conversation with chase took over an hour and consisted of her just reading off a sheet asking set questions.

as a result i have transferred my money out of chase and will be closing the account
I suggest you change your Just Eat password.
If that account has been compromised, that would explain the just eat order attempt. The last 4 digits of the card, and your mobile number would be in your account.
Spoofing the calling number is trivial.

Not sure on the notification though
I’ve had a similar issue with Starling bank, received text to confirm details etc.
Call them as never trust a text or an unsolicited call.
The one is, First Direct. All the call staff are from the uk, Leeds etc.
The fraud checks are done by their sister company HSBC and are India based.
Who is going to trust and unsolicited call from a foreign call centre.
The get quite irate when you say I will just ring the bank back thanks.

Nobody should trust an unsolicited call from anywhere. Judging someone to be trustworthy by the way they speak is a big mistake.

I've never experienced this, but if I did I'd be raising a complaint and insisting the call centre staff are retrained to expect and welcome this. Until such time as they can answer some security questions to prove to me they are who they say they are. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. The Chase system of sending a push notification is great as it fulfils this need, telling you that you've been called and the name of the person you are speaking with.
  • When linking your Chase Mastercard debit card to Curve, is it better to use the ‘virtual’ card details from the Chase app, or to use your ‘real’ card details by putting your physical card on an NFC reader? I saw somebody earlier say they used an Android app so they could use the physical card on Curve. What is the advantage to this?

It shouldn't matter for Curve fronting. The advantage to using the physical card details is if you need to produce the card used to make the purchase (for example when collecting train tickets or validating a hotel booking). If using Curve for those sort of things, the card details they hold will be different whichever you use.

Thanks. I must be confusing this with Airtime Rewards then. I’m assuming that I would need to add the physical card details of the Chase debit card to the Airtime Rewards app if I will be paying in-store with chip & pin? Or I could just add my Curve card details onto Airtime Rewards and then use Chase as the underlying funding source.

Currently Chase have a £25k daily withdrawal limit and are also stopping large transactions for fraud checks. I did not know this until after i had invested over £200k with them. It seems i will have difficulty getting this money out when needed. What would happen if i just requested the account be closed and all the funds transferred to my Halifax current account? Could they refuse? Or would they make me try to withdrawal money daily before they close the account?
They could certainly close your account on request but not sure they would pay 200k to another bank - maybe if it was on your list of existing payees, maybe not.

Although of no help today, if Chase ever become part of CASS you could do it that way,

If you need a link between your physical card purchases and your online registration of your card details, then you must enter your physical card details online. You will not be able to use Curve if you register with your Chase physical card.

Is that because the Chase physical card details are setup for C&P/contactless payments only and not online payments? Guessing I couldn’t use the physical card details for an online train ticket purchase for collection owing to the same reason?

If you pay with Curve, the Curve card details are used, not the Chase (or other card).

As k_man says, you need to make sure the card details you enter match the card you physically present to complete the transaction, whether that is your Curve card or Chase card. The details in the Chase app do not match the Chase physical card, but if using Curve, it doesn't matter which Chase details you link with Curve as long as your Curve card matches the card details you enter.
