I'm hoping someone can help me. I haggled a bit for my contract 2 years ago and managed to get an Xperia X10 for free with 600 mins, unlimited texts and 1gb internet for £27 a month

My girlfriend's contract is up for renewal and she pays £35 a month for 400 minutes, 250mb internet and unlimited text on a SE Vivaz, she's hoping to get a Galaxy S2 but wants to pay around the same as me and hopefully get the phone free, she's been with them 2 years and if someone could just run me through the best way to go abouttrying to achieve this deal, that would be great, thanks.

The way I played it was to look up the deals available on retailers websites, going via Quidco for cashback. Work out the actual monthly cost including all discounts/cashback offers, THEN ring Orange retentions. SMILE, it really can be heard down the phone...and BE POLITE THROUGHOUT. I told them that I was sorry to be doing this...happy with your service...always recommended them...hot air, hot air ;) BUT I have been contacted by a retailer offering me a much better deal than my current contract, so how do I go about keeping my number please?

Surprise surprise, they ask what the offer is and who with, to which I tell them the RETAILERS name, e.g.Phones4U/OneStopPhoneShop/OuterSpaceMobiles (offer was with Orange, so didn't mention that, silly me), and roughly the number of SMS/data allowance/mins (unlimited, hundreds, more than i'll ever use etc etc).

They make offer, I suck teeth, tell them it's very reasonable but I was hoping for X phone, (I chose one that Orange don't do, so no way they could only match the offer) a few more mins, more data, whatever. Much Hmmming, I'm tempted, I just don't know what to do for the best, anything to make them think they nearly have you, then a bit of silence which most people will want to fill...with a better offer.

Hey, even tell them you would do the deal if only they could offer a better phone / bit of discount on the phone you really want (I did this AFTER getting them to offer everything, and more, than I was hoping for).

No guarantees of course, but it's my way, and never failed yet. Good luck

I've just recently spoken to retentions and left them slightly bewildered after rattling off a number of better deals available. I'm getting out of my contract early as i'm being lent the money to do so, so I rang them to let them know and there really isn't anything they can offer me any more.

According to them, my average minutes usage per month is 807 (odd number i know :)), and i'm apparently unique in the sense that the trend is towards less minutes use and more towards data and texting.

This was after my first attempt at retentions and I was put through to a woman who begrudgingly offered me a 1 month sim-only deal for 800 minutes, 250mb of data and unlimited texts for £26 quid.

I said "Well the problem I have is that there's a sim-only on Tesco Mobile that offers me 1,500 minutes, 5000 texts and 1gb of data for £17.50 a month with a 12 month commitment".

She said "Well i've arranged for your PAC code to be sent to you, goodbye!" and put the phone down !!.

So the upshot of that is that I am indeed taking the Tesco Sim-Only deal for £17.50 a month. Got my PAC as well so with any luck it'll all be done next week.

then again can they really do anything if youre buying yourself out of your contract? its not technically at the end so they probably cant offer much

still they dont have to be rude about it

Have just gone for this deal with the £15 upfront.
    Previous deal was;
    400 mins
    300 texts
    U/l landlines
    Magic nos
    No data
    24 months
    SE W995
    £22/month

First Orange CS I spoke to a few days ago was not willing to do a deal, 2nd and 3rd people were much more helpful - offered loads of calls & texts without being pressed.

Plan to sell the HTC and pick up a Motorola Defy Plus.
Monthly cost over 2 years will be less than £2 more than I'm on at present but on more of everything. If the Defy Plus is rugged enough it might last 3 years - more savings.

    Good luck all,

    Bob

I did say to the 2nd person I spoke to that I fully appreciated that I was buying myself out, but I also did ask him, based on his experience, what he could likely do if I waited until August.

He said that the most likely amount he could discount off the overall cost was £5 quid. He said in some cases it might be up to £10 quid, but it probably wouldn't be for as much minutes as I need.

i did appreciate the fact that he at least made an effort to try and find me a deal based on the criteria he had.

We are very light users but our 18 months was coming to an end... we were offered

    12month sim only
    £5.39 (inc VAT)
    100MINS
    ULD TEXTS
    250MB DATA

    Option 2
    £10.50
    200mins
    Uld texts
    1G

Poke them both and went for the Tesco £7.50 a month 250 mins 5000 txt and 500mb data. They gave us a free Samsung chat which will go on eBay for 50 quid and they are sending us a Micro sim so happy days.

  • Do you have to be within the 30 day window to get through to retentions as I asked for the code there and I was told that I could only leave the network without incurring a charge if it was within 30 days of the contract ending.

Can you effectively get through to retentions at the earliest possible point you can upgrade your phone(3 months before end)
