I was on two year contract due to expire on 23 June 11. The original line rent was £40 for the contract but when I signed up there was £10 discount offered that time by mobiles.co.uk (£10 discount was directly being applied to my bill) so i got £40 worth of deal for £30. I also got LG cookie (worth £90 that time) and a free laptop worth £300 that time) . My average monthly usage is about £35 a month with 1200 xnet mins, ultd txts and 500 mb data.

Called orange on 15 June 11 to cancel the contract. Did not speak with upgrades at all and then I was forwarded to retention department. I was thinking of switching to O2 for iphone 4 for £35 a month. Then i was offered such an tempting deal by retention that I could not resist and renewed the contract on the spot:

    New deal:
    £15 a month (24 months)
three options given 1. HTD desire s 2. Mozart 3. Nokia N8 (free). I choose HTC desire s
    1200 x-net mins
    unlimited landline
    1300 txts (i think)
    500MB of data

Thats just £15x24=£360 for 24 months and just the cost of phone seems to be in the region of £275. Seems too good too be true but this has happened to me.

Deal appears to be very similar to the one i got last month from Orange.

HTC Desire S - Free of Charge
    Racoon £35 - 24 Months
    900 Anytime Minutes
    600 Loyalty Minutes = 1500 Minutes
    300 Texts
    1000 Loyalty Texts = 1300 Texts
    Unlimited Landline Calls
    £10 Loyalty Discount
    £5 Loyalty Discount
    10% Corporate Staff Discount

    = £16.50 per month

Hi, this is my first time trying to get a better deal and didn't get a good deal at all!

    They offered me for £20:

    400mins
    UL Txts
    500MB

but the phone I wanted (samsung galaxy 2) they said would £172!!

Couldn't believe my ears when they said this relating to the deals some people get on here! The phone is out of stock and I said I would ring back when it was in stock to see if they could offer me something better, but if thats the best they could do, I really think I will actually be going!

Anybody got any hints or tips on how to get the best deals?

What deal are you on at the moment? Do you often go over your limit? Are you in the last 30 days of your contract?

Ah. That's where you are going wrong. You only get good deals when you are serious about leaving.

You know what handset you want ... so request you're PAC and see what they can do. It's a good idea to see what you can get elsewhere before you call.

You need to approach the situation with the intent that you are going to leave. What I tend to do is:

-First look around at deals that interest you, check the networks websites or places like dialaphone or buymobilephones etc. Make a note of the best deals, it'll come in handy as they will ask for proof later.

-Phone up Orange Customer Services, go straight through to their disconnections department.

-State that you are in the last 30 days of your contract, you want to request your pac code and close your account.

-They'll ask why, tell them you've found a better deal. They will ask for details, give them the info that you've researched.

-You'll be put on hold whilst they check what they can offer you, then they'll come back with something that is competitive.
