I then noticed that other posters on the forum were getting a Desire HD on upgrade without having to join the waiting list so I rang up Orange to ask where my handset was. The bloke I spoke to was very apologetic and said that according to his system there were none in stock and that I was still on the waiting list, however he offered to credit £30 to my account as means of an apology which cheered me up It seems that once the handsets arrive its a bit of a free for all so I think I'll call retentions every morning until I finally get my new phone rather than wait for the mythical text to let me know it's on the way.

This deal was offered with a 24 month contract. I'm going to ring back later and try and get free insurance too so will let you know how I get on. They haven't mentioned if the phone is in stock or not but I will tell them that 02 are offering me free next day delivery for the handset and see if they can match it.

All arrived Tuesday - taken a while to convert stuff from iPhone and set up emails but all done now. Seems terribly complicated though. New (steep) learning curve.....

Great deal nontheless - £280 over the 18 months.

I waited weeks too and nothing....now changed my mind as got fed up and am waiting for a HTC Desire instead!

They don't seem to be able to give any realistic timescales, although was told last weekend that N8's were due in today so might be worth a call...but to be honest you get a different story all the while.

Just thought I’d share some tips. Called Orange Retentions last week wanting to upgrade, but trying to get a better deal, AND wanted the Desire HD free. I was offered Dolphin 40 with a £5 discount, so £35 monthly. For this, I get:
Free Desire HD
1200 minutes
Unlimited Texts (3000 cap)
Unlimited Internet (500mb cap)

They put me on the waiting list and said id get the ‘infamous text’ when the phone was back in stock so that I could complete the order. It’s been about a week, and when I called yesterday morning, they said they were expecting some ‘soon’. But this has been the same story since last week. Decided to pop into Phones4U who only had one more in stock. Explained to them that I had been offered a retention tariff from Orange and asked if they were able to process this. I was told yes…and after completing the necessary paperwork, I now have my shiny new Desire HD. I’d advise that you guys call around to Phones4u or Carphone Warehouse to see if they can process your retention order. That way…you’ll avoid waiting in vain for the infamous ‘text’ to say the phone is now in stock.

I'd say this is a good deal, it would be a very good deal if you could get the phone for free
